“Snooze” functionality is incredibly stupid and ought to be removed entirely from all clocks and software with alarm clocks:

It’s been proven in several studies that you gain absolutely nothing from snoozing a couple minutes or even hours after having been woken the first time (assuming you’ve slept a full 6-8 hours in one go).

In fact, it’s almost guaranteed to make you feel even worse and more tired than if you were to ignore your tiredness upon first waking and just get up instead of snoozing.

Doesn’t matter how long you snooze or how many times you press the snooze button, minutes of time you get to snooze before the next alarm -It will never feel like enough because it actually doesn’t get you more rested.

It’s (sleep) science:

The body will either not enter a full sleep cycle at all or, at worst, it will wake you again midway through a sleep cycle.

Waking midway through a sleep cycle makes you groggy and tired when you finally get up, and it’s also the same phenomenon that’s making you want to snooze the first time after waking.

-Go to bed earlier and get up without snoozing. Or have your Watch charge at night and get some old alarm clock with a big snooze button and go back to dreaming about how “just five minutes more” will make you feel less tired.

Now imagine that you were alarmed by the GREAT Apple Watch on time and you muted it (by covering the watch face) and your body (FOR SOME PHYSIOLOGICAL REASONS) decided to put you to sleep again. I can't even remember that I was alarmed to be honest.

What then? Surely, I would have appreciated an alarm 9 minutes later...

I take it English is not your first language? "I was alarmed" means you were scared. You need to say something like "when the alarm went off."

And I totally have that happen to me, too, where I know I'm supposed to get up, I know it's not good for me to snooze some more minutes, but my body totally refuses to wake up. I suppose some people are lucky enough to never get into that kind of state. It's not pleasant, but it happens.
 
I'd like to know why so many people think it's not a problem that accidentally covering the face of the watch turns the alarm off. Even Apple thinks it was a problem. From an article here about WatchOS 9.4:

Specifically, Apple says that a wake-up alarm set in a Sleep Focus mode will no longer be silenced with the "Cover to Mute" gesture starting with watchOS 9.4. This means if the palm of your hand happens to cover your Apple Watch's display for three seconds while sleeping, the alarm will no longer be silenced unintentionally.
That only applies to wake-up alarms done through the Sleep app. I think most of us here are talking about regular alarms through the Alarms app, where the three second rule does not apply. Regular alarms still get muted after unintentionally covering the face for a split second.

Why can't the Californian "Geniuses" implement a mechanism that works like the snooze button on every other alarm clock?
Think of it as a feature not a bug and get over it. ;~) Each alarm device is a little bit different. Use whichever ones suit you.

An amusing thread.
Personally I’m happy with alarms on my iPhone and Apple Watch.
The fixed snooze does not bother me as I’ve never had a clock where snooze was adjustable.
As for why 9 minutes, it’s Apple homage to mechanical clocks. Do a Google search and it’ll explain why.

I set no less than ten alarms ... one minute apart from each other ... to effectively annoy myself awake. I also have a back up alarm just in case. If you can't find a way to responsibly wake yourself up in the morning, that is not a technology issue.

I do the same 🤣
I have multiple alarms one minute apart, and a backup alarm on my iPhone (in case the watch fails to wake me up)

I turned off "Cover to Mute" in Sounds and Haptics a long time ago. It always seemed to kick in at the worst times.
