When you think about it, this year's upgrades are VERY minor, with the exception of the Ultra's hardware enhancements, which I feel that, with the genius that is Apple's marketing, they decided to make that differentiation as to help encourage sales from an otherwise lackluster upgrade year (at least for those like me who have a Series 7; that's not to say that it's not more worthy of an upgrade for others with older generations, however).
After reading through some of the posts and insights from Ultra owners along with my own experiences, I can say that I don't anticipate hanging onto my Ultra. What REALLY drew me in was the better brightness and doubled battery life. What I'm now looking forward to is a REAL upgrade to my Series 7 gold stainless that I'll be rocking for another year as there's really nothing wrong with it! With that said, what I would like to see is some of the Ultra's exclusive hardware features make it over to the Series 9, which include the better battery life and higher brightness (through hardware and software upgrades). Heck, we're still stuck with 2020's Series 6 S6 processor, just rebranded and repackaged!
With that said, I believe that next year we'll FINALLY see a new processor in the form of the S9, which I would only expect at this point unless Apple's development capabilities for their processors have been limited that much, whether outside of their control or not. I also would love to see an even more durable screen from impacts like with what the Ultra has as, even though I don't think that the Ultra is as nice looking as the traditional Series models, I do like the extra durability of the Ultra and would like to see some more endurance improvements trickle down to the standard design.
Oh, and, speaking of design, I'm sure that Apple will probably update the design of the standard model to perhaps be more Ultra-like without sacrificing the more all-around appearance of what we've been more accustomed to since the original model. This could include making the screen flat and perhaps more protected like with what the Ultra has so that it's more resistant to the achilles heel of its current design: impacts that crack the screen on the edges/corners.
I'm glad to see Apple slowly, but surely evolving their lineup in the smartwatch realm and are making it even more of an invaluable tool that drew me into the lineup in the first place back in 2015. But, enough about me, is there anything that YOU would like to see come next gen that I perhaps missed? What else do you think Apple needs to implement in the next iteration?
