After looking through this forum and only seeing threads dedicated to those who have pre-ordered/own Ultras and those who are returning those, I didn't find one for those who are debating about keeping theirs or not, so I thought I'd make a thread dedicated to this third tier of owners who either bought Ultra, thinking that they either wanted to keep it, but perhaps feel that it's not for them or for those who bought to try it out in person during the receipt window of their purchase to see if it's TRULY for them or not.

As far as I'm concerned, I'm leaning towards returning mine after I first thought that I'd keep it when I got it last Friday. Here are my own observations:
  • The watch is DEFINITELY bigger and thicker than the Series 8 and noticeably heavier, despite the lighter than stainless steel titanium.
  • The screen brightness is noticeable in direct sunlight, but not mind-blowingly different (but still definitely noticeable).
  • The bigger crown is grippier and is not as smooth as the Series 7 from where I came from.
  • The biggest aspect that has me debating on whether to keep it or not is the look. At first, I didn't think too highly of it, finding it kind of weird, but then the look grew on me. Still, I have my gold stainless steel Series 7 that I compare it to and I definitely find the gold more attractive (I know, I know: it's supposed to be rugged, but rugged watches can still look good: just look at dive watches!).
  • Although no damage on mine, this titanium finish is probably not as durable as you may be led to believe: my gold Series 7's PVD coating has kept it looking almost completely new since I got it as a gift for Christmas last year (a slight hairline scratch that may have very well been from the factory that I missed until MUCH later on is the only exception). The screen, however, has a noticeably thicker, less smooth feel which is probably because Apple made that more durable.
  • Speaking of the screen, it's not really any bigger than the Series 7/8: it's basically the same size because of a thicker bezel that's also slightly more rounded, making the Series 7/8 look more square, interestingly enough!
  • The exclusive Wayfinder watch face is pretty cool, fitting up to 8 complications on one face (not unlike certain other faces, like Modular). Also, it's cool to be able to make everything turn red for nighttime viewing, which I've already done a few times now. My only complaint about it is that, to make everything fit on it, including the cellular that automatically appears in the inner-upper section, the text and complications are smaller and, since the screen practically isn't bigger than the Series 7/8, it's not an optical illusion: it really is smaller, albeit not too much!
With all of the above mentioned, I'm still debating if it's worth the almost $1,000 with AppleCare and tax to hang onto; my gut says "no", but I'll miss the features that it has, including the doubled battery life. Then again, with waiting until next year, I would be shocked if Apple didn't implement at least the better battery life and brighter screen in next year's Series 9 (just like how the pro model iPhone features drip down to the regular models the following year, like Dynamic Island). Also, don't forget that we're overdue to have a new processor, the S9, that's an ACTUAL upgrade from the Series 6's S6 circa 2020, which has been rebranded and repackaged in the last 2 watches that succeeded it! At any rate, you have at least 14 days to decide if you bought it in-store; 28 days if you bought it online and set up a return by the 14th day, which should give PLENTY of time to make an informed decision, which I know I'm in the process of making, myself...

I haven’t got one but the weight puts me off big time , i thought the whole point of titanium was its lightness compared to steel ?

I’ve got an aluminium 6 and a ss graphite 6 , the weight difference is noticeable and not in a good way , from what I’ve read the ultra is even heavier !

61g !

  • Aluminum: 30.5g
  • Stainless Steel: 39.7g
  • Titanium: 34.6g

From how the ultra felt when I tried it on at the store, the weight isn't a problem. For some reason, the ultra fits more snugly against my wrist than my aluminum S6 41. So even though the ultra is physically heavier, it doesn't feel heavier than my S6 when it's on my wrist. Now, I only tried it on for a few minutes, so I might feel differently if I wear the ultra for a whole day. But anyone who is on the fence about the ultra should actually try one before deciding, because the numbers don't tell the whole story.

I think the watch is more comfortable than my S7. It’s slightly heavier but I don’t notice because the wider case better distributes the weight. It does feel like it’s floating as much on the rounded back, for me at lease.

The screen is way better to look at. It’s not smaller but the ratio is a little different. I don’t think you gain any practical screen real estate, but it’s more crisp and the double brightness is waaaaay better.

Personally I think people have way too high of expectations with finish but I get it because I like to keep things looking pristine. My traditional watches if Ti and SS were durable but the metal gets wear, scratches, and sort of this polished patina over time. The Apple Watch won’t be any different. What I hate is a dinged crystal.

There is some valid concern over the AWU finish resistance to scratches and nicks. The watch is waaaaay more durable to abuse but it’s not going to be more scratch resistant than SS. The Ti Apple Watch editions weren’t either. I think the bubble crystals of the regular model kind of protected the case ironically from the daily knocks. I hit my S7 all over stuff and never scuffed the crystal. I think we will see more wear around the case edges around the screen that the typical models. Those kind of nicks happen on a Ti Tag Huer too…..

Battery life alone makes me not even question keeping it. Everything else is a bonus.

does anyone know yet if the AWU can be charged DURING an activity? i.e. with a portable power bank while out hiking/running without stopping the activity and starting a new one.

Not everyone can return, mine was bought from a retailer with no return once opened for change of mind.
living on the edge lol
Sold my S7 today.

Good question. I doubt it because I’m assuming taking the watch off would stop the workout.

The sport bands are way heavier than the alpine loop so evens out

I had worn Rolexes in the past. One model, a Sea Dweller, is one of the heaviest watches out there, it’s essentially a diving watch but I do no diving. I’m not aware of many people who complain about the weight of their Rolexes, they just feel fortunate to have one. Once you wear a watch regularly you will never notice the weight unless you’re anal enough to get a scale and start weighing various models. For those who don’t normally wear watches it could be an issue but for anyone who has worn quality watches it is not.

I'd happily go with the Ultra if it could replace my Garmin, but for now it's just not a good enough sports watch for my needs (so I'll likely stick with an AW S6/S7 and Garmin 955 combo).

This is probably the best review I've read –

Returned mine and went back to my Hermes Series 7. Liked the Ultra, but too many negatives for me (the price was a positive though coming from a Hermes). Would have saved me money for once lol.

Taking the watch off would PAUSE the workout. You can resume it when you put it back on. Mind, you have to resume it manually, it won't automatically restart.

Not sure what would happen if you put a watch with a paused workout on a charger, never tried that.

Note that even if there were a charger you could somehow attach while wearing the watch, attaching a charger will break the connection between wrist and watch, making it impossible for watch to monitor your workout while charging.

If you look at the weight difference between the SS and the Alum its huge. The SS to a larger Ultra is not very much considering the size increase. Thats what Ti gets you.
