The ATV's Hard Drive

I'm killing my brain going back and forth on the mini/ATV decision. The hard drive space on an ATV is for downloaded content only? Or could I load up this thing with MP4's I made myself from DVDs?

With the former software, HDD space could be used as a buffer for streaming, and storage of music, photos, and movies synced through iTunes. ...I assume this still applies to "Apple TV Take 2."

You can put MP4 video onto the ATV's hard drive (through sync'ing with iTunes) so long as they are compliant with Apple's specifications.
