"Just recently the FCC has given up. Period. Everything is now approved by the FCC, they were tired of being caught up in the hype"-CNN

The new iPod will be as follows-
3 terabytes of flash memory.
32 gigs of ram
1080p
multi-touch screen
FULL os Leopard
iLife 08
Adobe CS3
Bluetooth
Wifi
8mp camera with flash
HD video camera
iChat with video
every song ever played, recorded, even thought of by the Beatles is preloaded on the device
and of course...
guitar hero 3.
seriously people, we can only speculate so much.

but it is so much fun thinking about what could happen! :D

No 3G? Damn that's bad, we folks in Europe don't want it.

and no doubt, in my mind that a wifi iPod would dip into iPhone sales.
Those who want a phone will buy a phone, iPod notwithstanding. Those who don't want a phone will consider only the iPod. I don't think iPods dip into iPhone sales, but vice-versa.

The number of people who switched to Cingular just to get an iPhone is unprecedented in the world of cellular communications...at least 30% of all iPhone buyers are switchers...I think the number is actually higher...
According to Apple's numbers about 240,000 iPhones were sold in the previous quarter, albeit in 2 days. Let's see how this quarter fares. The more the merrier.

and once the phone is unlocked in 1.5 yrs, then what? Not a factor.
I think you're confused on this point. If the iPhone is unlocked, it won't be because of Apple or AT&T. AT&T has a 5-year exclusive on iPhone, and subsequent firmware revisions may re-lock hacked iPhones.

How does this relate to a wifi iPod dipping into iPhone sales?
The argument rests on price. Cost of purchase and cost of ownership are always a differentiating factor between products. The iPhone has a higher cost of purchase and a considerable cost of ownership, neither of which an iPod suffers from. Some will be swayed towards the iPod and only the iPod because of price, and will buy a zero-dollar mobile phone elsewhere.

Another way of thinking about it- Assuming that the iPod Touch is a high-end model, and using the common estimate that flash memory is ~10x more expensive than HD:

$499- 40GB iPod Touch- Everything but the phone. Yes that includes camera, wifi, Bluetooth, Safari, etc.
$599- 80GB iPod Touch- Again, everything but the phone.

Basically, you can pick having the cell phone, or the increased storage of a HD. Either way Apple makes about the same profit margin, though they lose out on the couple of bucks a month kickback from AT&T. But by getting rid of the cell radio, they also save $15 or $20 in parts to partially counteract this.

Would such a rollout convince people that 'sales cannibalization' is simply not an issue if the pricing is right for Apple? By the same token, if a fully featured iPod Touch weren't priced close to the iPhone, then I agree there would be revenue/product mix issues for Apple. It just depends on which price points Apple wants to hit here.

I think there are people who:
1. Want a HD-based version with higher storage
2. Already have a cell phone they are satisfied with, or don't have good AT&T coverage in their area
3. Both 1 and 2

I think ultimately the phone-centric people would choose the iPhone, and the really media-centric people will choose the HD-based Touch. Everyone wins, because everyone gets the same great user experience. And Apple makes nearly the same profit either way.

40GB and 80GB. :D:D:D

How about 80GB and 120GB.

80GB and 120GB would be great, but I just used 40GB and 80GB to try to keep costs equivalent.

You could argue that the savings of eliminating cell radio can be used towards bumping up the HD to 60GB and 100GB (or what have you. ;))

I have to say, even 60GB and 100GB looks a lot better if you're going to have iPods that cost that much.

The new iPod will be as follows...

SNL Weekend Edition - "What's the battery life?"
Steve Jobs - "20 minutes!"

As to price, I think we will see a 120GB top-end unit for $449 and a 80GB unit for $399. That way, the top end iPod Nano/Mini/Squat can be 80GB at $349 and a 40GB unit for $299. All will use Samsung drives. The 160GB Samsung might be a possibility, but it isn't currently available I believe.

If they stay with Toshiba, then expect 60GB and 100GB since Toshiba does not have a 120GB 1.8" HDD.

I pray the iPod Nano stays the same. 32GB model for $299, 16GB for $249, 8GB for $199 and they drop the 2GB model. Shuffle goes to 2GB at $99.

But 40GB and 80GB is old news. They'll for SURE have an iPod larger than 80GB on the high end. That's a no brainer.

Hey guys. I just talked to some friends of mine from inside Apple. Their names are Intelligence, Logic, and Reason.

They told me that the new iPod will have Wi-Fi.

I hope you are right and I wish the same, but if the iPods next week do not have wi-fi, I think you are going to stay away from this forum for awhile due your pretentious arrogance.:D:eek:

Arrogance?

I don't work for Apple. I'm not related to anybody who does. Where do you come up with "arrogance"?

I'm simply stating facts.

dude,
seriously.

There are several good reasons why Apple should not put wi-fi and several good ones why they should put it on the iPod. Every side has a good point to make. Just read the previous posts. Nobody here knows if it is going or not to happen.

Unless you work for Apple or knows any inside information, your affirmation of "stating facts" seems arrogant to me.

Like I said, I truly hope you are right because I want wi-fi too, but if it doesn't happen I believe you will have hard time posting in this forum for awhile. So good luck to you.;)

That's just fine with me, because the iPod will have Wi-Fi.

Its not a fact, even if you turn out to be right, currently it is a guess.

Uhm.. a guess is when someone admits that they don't know something, and predict what it will be.

If there are iPods sitting in Apple warehouses RIGHT NOW with Wi-Fi in them, and i'm telling you that they have Wi-Fi in them, it is a fact, not a guess.

I think what zap means is that you are seemingly guessing that there are iPods with Wi-Fi in them without actually knowing any inside information regardless of your statement's authenticity.

I agree with Martin. Whatever happens, the new iPod is gonna be ballin.

I don't believe that the iPhone should be considered a competitor to an iPod Touch. People who want a media device is not going to want a phone as part of the package (due to monthly fees and whatnot). I think the competitor product would be the Archos 605. An 80gig Archos is $350 +$50 for the browser plugin and h.264/aac codex. If Archos can build this device for 400, why can't Apple?

I think an 80 gig touchscreen and wifi for 399 and a 120 for 449-499 is doable.

I just got off the phone with my friend Steve...he works for Apple...and he told me that the iPod Touch is coming out on Wednesday and that it will in fact have Wi-Fi and bluetooth. He then said it will also be OS X based and will be able to watch hours upon hours of video.

But it doesnt play music.:(

ARGH...! Just can't wait. Already sold my 2gen 8GB Nano (before they drop in price with the new Ipod release) Got about $200 for it, and now I'm WAITING for the new high end Ipod.

But let's break it down - how likely is it that they will annonce both a new nano AND a new high end Ipod?
