Prudence dictates charging your battery before a presentation.
I do that on my laptop.
Let us know where you work so we don't have to sit through 10 hour presentations.
I think folks are making light of the OP's original question, but I think it is a legitimate one.
Assuming you don't sit your iPad on a dock or plugged in all day unless you are giving a presentation, there are possibilities of the following:
- You actually carry it with you throughout the day, using it for email, note taking, etcetera as the day goes by
- You fly in for your presentation, perhaps tweaking it on the plane
- Sending an external video signal may draw more power than just running the presentation itself
All of which could lead you to need external power while presenting. It's a question that makes sense, just one that we probably won't have an answer to at least until the iPad is available, and perhaps not until accessories are available.

With my iPhone, I've never had a problem with battery life using this because it charges your phone while it feeds video simultaneously.
OR am I missing a point to this thread?????
It's not an oversight on Apple's behalf, it's just undercooked at R&D I'm sure.
Good point. I bought one of those ages ago. It was a steep $50, but it came with a power adapter IIRC.

Shouldn't really be called a dock problem as the dock is just like the current ones where it has a USB connector and line out.
Course the VGA adapter doesn't. I don't think that you'd be presenting for that long, however. Also keep in mind that holding a 1.5lb device while it has a VGA cable (heavy) going out the bottom...I'd imagine that your arm would wear out faster than the battery 😛. Or at least your desier to keep holding it.

I find the comments regarding the excessive presentation length quite uninformed. I can often give training that runs for 10 hours during which there will be slides on screen in break out sessions but my laptop is still connected to the screen.
Also the iPad could be used at conferences to display presentations that run all day but one person does not sit in front of.
The question is not so much about whether the ipPad can be used for a 10 hour presentation - it is about how can the iPad be powered whilst displaying out - the answer would appear to be the same sort of cable as can be used for the iPhone.
I am so glad people are thinking more about toilet humour than about the challenges/opportunities the iPad provides... very helpful.

Thank you for your very enlightening post. Usage cases such as the ones you suggest hadn't occured to me, as I've never come upon them in my experience, but we learn something every day! Much of the unhelpful humor could have been avoided if the OP or somebody else had come up earlier with such a clear explanation of why an iPad might need to be charged during presentation.
