Look at the picture of the back of the iphone on the apple website. What the heck is the black band across the band? Rubberized plastic? Black acrylic? Black aluminum? A battery door??

upon closer inspection, it seems contiguous with the speaker/mic grilles and data port surround...i doubt it is removable, but why is there a second color for that band down there, it seems un-apple...
 
It's the tip of the Monolith... Has to be, all of us monkeys have been pawing at it. :p

Actual guess: it could be transparent to RF, for antennas

I don't know, but has anyone ever seen a picture of the top of the iphone?! I haven't. It might show a sim card slot. Or, maybe not.

there are pictures out. just not many exist

the sim card is a little slot on top of the phone
