I loved the series. Blackadder 2 is my all time favourite.

Nah... much as I love Blackadder, I love Father Ted more; especially the first season of it.

Mrs Doyle: What would you say to a nice cup of tea, Father?
Fr. Jack: Feck off cup :D

Father Ted is from Ireland, so not really a UK sitcom (although I understand all the interior scenes were shot in London). Very funny anyway.

For me, there are too many great British sitcoms to choose a favourite from. My current fave is Peep Show - hilarious. Also been indulging in a bit of Retro comedy action recently and watching Porridge DVDs

The only exposure I've had to Blackadder is picking up a copy of Blackadder II from audible.com a few months back. It runs just under three hours, so I am assuming that it is just some selected moments. Great stuff, and I'm sure it's far funnier with the visuals.
The DVD set sometimes shows up at Costco, along with the Complete Monty Python and Fawlty Towers sets. I'll be needing all of those.

I remember taking my daughter to see Mr. Bean when the movie came out in the US. Horribly stupid stuff. Hard to believe that it is the same Rowan Atkinson. Was the BBC show any better than the movie? Please, tell me the show was better than the movie.

It's top comedy, that's for sure. It's a toss up for me between the second and third series – lack most people it seems, I'm not that keen on the first series. Maybe something to do with the fact that over here, on terrestrial telly at least, it's hardly ever repeated – whereas the other three series get much more airplay. I've only seen the first series once, and that was a few years ago now... I might have to look it up again and see if my tastes have changed any.

And for those of you wanting to pepper your posts with Blackadderesque quotes, don't forget the BBC's Blackadder Random Quote Generator. ;)

Needs must when the devil vomits into your kettle...

The show was a better format for Mr Bean I think, but if you hated the movie the the shorter epsisodes are unlikely to change your opinion.

Atkinson's physical comedy in Mr. Bean is very good, but I've never found it as funny or watchable as Blackadder by a longshot. Blackadder thrives on dialogue, though there is always a phyysical comedic element as well. If I could boil Blackadder down to its essentials (why it is so great for me), it would be three things - 1.) historical settings/references. (I'm way into history) 2.) smart, witty and memorable dialogue 3.) interactions between enormously talented actors.

Anyway NOTHING can best the physical comedy of the Three Stooges (though Monty Python rises to the same height). But that's for another thread....;)

Blackadder II consisted of six 30 minute episodes, so it sounds like you've got the whole series there. But it's well worth picking up the DVDs, so if you spot them snap them up. You'll thank us for it. ;)

I think I'll start off with the first one and move up as it goes along. It should come before the end of the week so I'll finally get to see what the hell you all are talking about. :p

Blackadder I is pretty funny I think, but you will notice a slight format change when you get to Blackadder II. Most prefer the change. My favorite episode in series I is where Edmund becomes Archbishop of Canterbury...:D

"That's the one."

"I'm sure you're not the kind of person who believes something like sticking your finger up the bum of a sheep on a Saturday will give you good health for the week!"
"That's absurd. Its on a Monday."

I'm loving this. :D

Utterly brilliant comedy. I grew up watching this stuff... Blackadder, along with The Young Ones .

Blackadder and The Young Ones helped make me who I am today. MOre Young Ones than Blackadder (most days) - but I pay tribute to two wonderful shows .
