Cool factor. The macbooks have it and obviously don't need it.

The macbooks have it because the LCD screen lights up on the back as well. Apple didn't need to add anything and they just cut a hole in the case to have the backlight.

For an iPhone, this would require an extra LED light or something, which apple would most likely not do as it would waste space and money for a useless feature.

Moronic idea. 0%.

What's the point? Give me a purpose to it and I'll reconsider my supposition.

flash, flashlight applications, Say your iphone was face down on the counter with it on silent mode, no vibrate of course, and you get a phone call, txt, email, push notification, then it lights up to let you know it works.

starting to reconsider?

i wouldn't mind if it changed color also, depending on the type of alert. there is some functionality to it that apple doesnt have yet and would be a great way to implement it.

flash, /QUOTE]

The thought of this thing being used as a flash seems a little extreme. The reason being that the amount it would take to create a flash bright enough to light up a dark area with the apple would probably take a good bit of battery power.

its better than no flash, i dont care if its not extremely bright, its better than what we have right now. right?

Ok you win

I have to run to go find a new pair of shoes to go with my outfit.

It has its purposes. I'd like to see it, though I doubt we will. I really like the idea of it lighting up for calls or "push notifications."

I like this idea the best of its usage. Though i wouldn't mine if it stayed lighted while its on and turns off when its in sleep mode.

i dont get the joke? are you making fun of the fact that i would like it to change colors? if thats what your getting at you didnt understand what i meant, in the upper right hand of all balckberry's there is an led that blinks different colors telling you that you have service(green), bluetooth(blue), a new message(red) and there are other colors too. developers have taken advantage of that and had it blink different colors for different people that txt/email you. i think that with the number of developers for the iphone there could be some pretty useful/neat apps that could use that feature. its not nessesary but neither is an oled screen, a magno meter, front facing camera, new iphone, having an iphone in general, or having a phone. but since im paying for one of the best, if not the best, phones on the market why not?

are you really that scared to get your phone taken? You need to go work out or something...stop being such *******.
i dont want a feature put onto my phone because i am scared that I cant defend myself from someone who might want it.
are you serious?

I'm a girl and when I say that I mean I'm pretty stereotypical. I'd rate my chances of fighting off pretty much anyone as pretty low, and why'd I want the trouble anyway? Calm the machismo.

P.S.
to everyone who is scared of getting it stolen, DO NOT flaunt it! number 1 reason they get stolen if because your waving your phone around bragging about how much money you have.
and if your that scared about getting mugged, carry mace/knife or something, seriously, if your a man, BE A MAN.

Firstly, the iPhone's massive touch screen does a pretty good job of flaunting itself anyway, which is why I'm always quick to hold it to my face so the screen shuts off as I "flaunt" it by say, calling a taxi home at night  Having a glowing back as well would just makes things that bit more difficult. The fact that it'd be marked as an iPhone also makes it more of a target, people know how expensive they are.

And btw I'm pretty sure it's illegal to carry a knife here, and I'd rather give up my phone before I stabbed anyone, even a mugger
And as I mentioned above not everyone can be a big brave man, sometimes because whatever way you slice it you're physically weaker.

I completely understand the idea.
sorry if i was being a dick.

I personally don't want any lights on the back and a glowing apple well, no.
I think it would create and extreme weak point in the back of the phone. when failure occurs, the parts would push on the back of the circuitboard then into the screen.

Now if it was about the size of the camera hole and did have a functional flash pattern and provided some extra lighting for darker environments then perhaps.

iknow the back of my phone takes a beating and reducing its potential integrity of the back casing may increase my visits to ATT for replaacements.

thanks.

i dont think it would create a weak point, because leds are SMALL , its wouldnt be that big of a deal to put 5 or 6 back there in different colors. it would be bright enought to light up the whole apple and possibly some added light to your photos. i dont see apple adding the flash to the camera hole itself because it would have to be a bigger opening on the back of the iphone. plus it would really take away from the minamilistic design.

i guess I should clarify my comment was directed at males...obviously
but honestly...ive never felt like i was going to get my phone taken..maybe its where I live..but i just feel safe most of the time.

the glowing apple, if it happens, will be very easily covered by a case..

flash, flashlight applications,

Only purpose.

Say your iphone was face down on the counter

It wouldn't be. Who in their right mind would do that?

with it on silent mode, no vibrate of course, and you get a phone call, txt, email, push notification, then it lights up to let you know it works.

Or in your purse/pocket where you can't see it...

starting to reconsider?

Nope.

I'd like it as just something you can turn on or off. But, if it is like the macbooks, then I wouldn't mind. I'm sure jailbreaking or a software update can control when or how it does activate.

Nope.

I actually sit my iPhone on the screen, mainly because I don't want to get the back scratched up. I have an invisible shield on the screen, and I know the screen is really tough and won't be scratched up easily sitting on a table.

Correct?

I put mine face down, too.

I normally lay my phone face up, but if you think about it, it might be better keeping it face down. If something were to fall on the glass, let's say a marble for instance, when face up, the pressure on the glass would be concentrated on the part where the marble hit the glass. Probability of shattering...very likely. If the same marble fell on a phone that was sitting face down, the pressure from the impact would hit the back of the phone and be distributed across the entire piece of glass. Probability of shattering...unlikely.

Anybody want to test my theory?

umm, not i... hahaha. but would you agree that LEDs behind the apple could be useful/cool?

i doubt anybody really cares what tallest skill thinks cuz he is such a party pooper:D

Forget the light up Apple logo. I want the new iPhone to have a proximity sensor. Whenever someone comes within 50 ft of you, your iPhone screams "Look at me, I have a frickin' iPhone!!!"
