I've gotten several rental cars with USB outlets in them. I don't see why they don't make this standard on more cars rather than the few I've seen. It's obvioiusly possible.

Yet somehow it's socially acceptable to shove fast food down your throat 7 days a week without ever exercising.

Well said!

Do neither of you know any overweight people? Have you never asked them about how society judges them? They know darned well that society doesn't see them as acceptable.

Interesting that you seem to think otherwise, I'm guessing you've never asked.

You too, I smoke but am an avid ultimate frisbee player, walk and take public transport 99% of the places I go, and rarely use the elevator in my place, home cook most of my food and eat fast food maybe once every 3 months and yet somehow get judged for having an unhealthy lifestyle? If you say so...
My grandmother died of emphysema from life long smoking and she was otherwise fit. Smoking is just as unhealthy (if not more).

I'm not judging you as it's your body and you can do what you want. I'm just pointing that out.

As a matter of fact, my mother is an obese woman. I love her, but she is. You know what, she gets judged, but she's not treated like some horrible person, the way non-smokers on a self rightous kick treat smokers.

EDIT:Bear in mind that just because you have a personal story about smoking does not mean it is the norm. I have a great grandmother who is 98 years old and chain smokes, while my uncle who never smoked died at 53...

If you say so. I don't know many smokers to compare to in real life so I'll have to take your word for that half of it.

All I know is that I've seen internet threads on smoking and also the occational "should fat people buy 2 airplane seats?" articles and I'm just saying I can't tell the difference between the comments in either.

I think the difference comes in when it starts invading others space.

Smoking almost always does because the smoke drifts and non smokers generally hate the smell/their lungs reaction to it. Morbidly obese people generally take up a lot more space which can be very uncomfortable for those around them if they sit too near (I'm sure it's always very uncomfortable for the obese).

My guess the reason they don't put many 12v outlets in cars is because people will start hooking hair dryers and microwaves that pull alot of amps. I wonder what happens when they hook up a power strip!
Don't forget the Fax!

i thought overweight people IS society in america

Haven't you guys noticed? Smoking seems to be back in fashion. It seems (and this is in the SF Bay area!!) that half the people I see on a daily basis light up cigs all the time. No wonder the cig lighter socket hasnt' made its way out of cars.

Also: USB would work, but it might get dated pretty quick. 110v sockets is stupid because that means inverters, one more thing to break.

Who are you to judge what others do with their lives. The same thing can be said for alcohol abuse, taking drugs, eating too much red meat, having too much salt in their diets, eating hot dogs (nitrates), drinking soda (HFCs), etc.

so you see, there are many things in today's age that are considered harmful and while cigarette smoking is harmful, it is a personal choice.

Being obese, eating hot dogs, too much red meat, pop, etc. is indeed bad for you, just as smoking is bad, and we all the the negatives to all of this, and it IS a personal choice to do any of this. Drugs and Alcohol abuse also carry consequence by law, especially if you hurt someone else in the process.

The issue is, in almost every argument on this, all a person is doing is hurting himself or herself. Smoking hurts everyone around who is breathing in your same air space. If an obese person is chowing down on a huge meal 6 feet from you in a closed room, you'll leave unscathed, but sitting that close to a smoker who is smoking, causes actual damage to those around. Sure, laws are being passed not to ban smoking in public places, but it's not always a perfect solution.

Bottom line, do what you want to do to yourself, as long as it doesn't harm others while doing it.

As far as the socket in the car, I've converted both of mine to USB chargers with the Belkin flush mounted adapter.

I do not think so but, ok. I never used a car cigarette lighter so I wont miss this feature.

Greetings from a cyclist, jogger, climber and and hopefully self-respecting smoker ;)

I find it quite contradictory that you do all these healthy activities and yet you still pollute your lungs with cigarettes.

as per the topic, I use the car cigarette igniter outlet all the time if they made a USB port or if I had a car that came standard with it then sure I'd use it but for now I can cope with the cigarette igniter outlet.

Duh! If you hooked up a power strip in your car you could have instant WiFi with your laptop when you hooked up your wireless router!

KIDDING, KIDDING...

Let's not try that.

I actually agree with this. I am conscious of my personal effects on those around me. Although I am a smoker I am considerate enough that I don't smoke if a non-smoker is near enough to breath it in. I have friends that are allergic to cigarette smoke, so I know how bad that can suck.

I don't think smoking would be so socially unacceptable if all smokers were a little more considerate...After all, even though it is an addiction for us, we also know full well the effects of second hand.

Actually I have a dd-wrt router set up for repeater mode in my car. I only use my laptop when the car is parked though.
