No doubt the Apple Watch is infinitely more refined and meticulously designed. The round face is more pleasing as an aesthetic form.

Curvy is generally a more aesthetically pleasing form, but not necessarily circle. That's why the corners of the Watch are rounded.

I personally don't like circular watches without lugs, and the lugs actually square off the shape a bit.

The question is, how important are those things going to be, if you find that something like the Apple Watch is too important to your day to leave home? I also love watches and have collected them over the years. Nothing handmade like you're talking about, but I've owned Rolex, Omega, etc. Is that fun little hobby going to keep me from the practicalities of a smart watch? Probably not. As I mentioned earlier, it's like trading in my '60s Jaguar for a Tesla. It's not the end of the world.
I most certainly do not disagree.

Regarding the Jag vs Tesla it's all a matter of the same personal preferences we exercise as individuals.

I celebrate new and old, including the changes that go along with progress. Working on cutting edge research and development only makes my appreciation for "good old craftsmanship" even stronger.

I appreciate it, too. I remember crying myself to sleep because my mother wouldn't buy me a Swatch-copy in 1984, and, when I started running my own business, watches were the first thing that I splurged on. I'm just starting to worry that being interested in nice watches may go the way of being interested in nice typewriters, because I can't see myself wearing my mechanicals much, because, in running my own business, the notification capabilities of the Apple Watch will be hard to give up.

That certainly leaves me a bit heavy hearted, but, hey, Porsche is moving away from manual transmission, Leica is adding more and more electronic features, and mp3s are the standard way of listening to music...time marches on. No pun intended! :D

p.s. i actually do still listen to records, so maybe that isn't a good example. :)
