I also get annoyed when people call it OS 'ex', I was telling my sister to get to www dot Apple dot com and when I told her to type "/macosx/" she typed "/macos10/", needless to say that got a 404 error . She is also known to call it Mac OS 'ex', annoys me to no end.

That stuff annoys me also. My one friend calls it "Mac Os ten". He pronounces the OS as a word and doesn't say "O, S". Hard to explain but oh well, anyways...

So instead of "Oh ess" He say "Ohs" (similar to Oz but with an 's') right?

I've corrected one of my coworkers who had said "OS ex" one time and told him that it was OS ten...he was baffled. I was just being facetious, I didn't realize that there was an army out there saying "TEN NOT EX!" :D

I don't see it as that big of a deal either way, when I am reading it I always seem to read it as "OS ex" but when I speak I say "OS ten". I guess it is good that I am at least trying to spread it correctly without even realizing it. :apple:

If your getting annoyed by that, what do you think of people calling Mac OS Ten point five, leopard, the X is more recognisable than the word 10, plus it sounds much more snazzy saying Mac OS X, than saying Mac OS 10, also how do you know if this is the right way to say this, it's a matter of opinion that it should be said as 10, i know it's Roman numerals, but what if apple intended for it to be pronounced as 'X' rather than 10, if apple wanted people to say Mac OS '10' they would have called it that, but as i said earlier 'X' sounds much people snazzy

How do I know? Why not ask your mac? Open up terminal, and type in 'say Mac OS X'

You can also open up Speech Prefs as I have done in the video.

Or you can go into TextEdit, type in Mac OS X, then click on Text Edit > Services > Speech > Start Speaking Text

In all of these ways, the Mac would say ten :).

Also, in the OS X(ten) keynote, Steve Jobs said OS ten, and there was a giant X on the screen. He clearly intended his software to be said as "Mac Oh Ess Ten" :)

Hope this helps your bafflement. And yes I realized I spelled the word wrong.

You can keep whatever silly pet peeves you want, but I use both interchangeably. If I'm talking about OSX in general, I'll pronounce it "ex". (As in "Hey why aren't you using Mac OS X yet?") On the other hand if I'm talking about a specific version of OSX, I'll usually say it numerically. (As in "Man, Mac OS 10.5 is going to have some cool new features.") Personally it doesn't matter to me; everyone knows what I'm talking about whichever way someone pronounces it, and it really doesn't make too much of a difference.

The point of language is to convey meaning, and if everyone knows what you're talking about whether you use the "correct" pronunciation or not...what does it matter?

Yer it really bugs me when people call it OS Ex
They are a plague upon the community, and need to be dealt with.

I have the same trouble with the so called Ex Serves. I mean, come on people! It's obviously upposed to be Ten-Serves.
I mean no company in the world is going to use X branding and expect it to be pronounced in two different ways are they! That would be far to confusing.

So if my name is Jeff, and you say Jif (as in the peanut butter), Jif is wrong, but Jeff is correct, but based upon your logic, Jif is also correct (Excusing any accents you may have of course) :/

I don't get it though, I just posted this to tell people the correct way to say it, I didn't expect a heated debate on how you pronounce the name of our beloved OS.

Someone should do a poll of what people say by region, I know quite a few mac users in the UK and I have never heard on eof them say OS 10 , always OSX or tiger.

I say OS Ex. I don't know why. I also don't see why it matters how you pronounce it.

I'm from the UK and use both interchangeably even in the same sentence

I feel that since Apple chose to use the Roman numeral X we should all call it OS Decem or OS Decimus.
