Finder > Preferences > General > Show these items on the Desktop:the external drive doesnt even appear on the desktop so i cant even properly eject the disk.
You just unplugged it from the computer. Mac OS X wants you to eject the drive before unplugging it.

Exactly. Mac OS X wants you to eject the drive before unplugging it. Because you didn't eject it the last time you unplugged it, you'll get that message when you plug it in.no the message appeared when i plugged in my external drive for the first time in a few weeks.

It sounds like there may be a problem with the drive, if it's not being properly detected. What format is the drive? You may want to check the drive with Disk Utility.all the boxes are checked off, all my other external drives appear on the desktop
