Yep, at least its only a few months of data that he lost.
Could have been worst.
It freaks me out that people don't back up ever. I only back up ever two weeks or so, but if I ever put anything onto my phone that i feel is "precious" data, I instantly sync it up. I just don't trust technology after losing all my Italy photos to a faulty SD card all those years ago....haha :D

I hear you.
I had a few friends just lose all their honeymoon cruise trip pics to a faulty SD card too. Sucks but happens often, backing up is important.

Okay, well, I'm going to let this thread live another day to see if anyone (or hey, maybe even me!) comes up with a new idea.

Then I'm just going to go for the restore.

Anyone have any comments on that link i posted?

From just skimming over what the guy is saying, it seems that his iPhone was still detectable. If you're isn't being detected, then I don't think it's gonna work. He gives instructions, so it's worth a shot if you wanna try it.

Gave it another go this morning, just couldnt get the stuff.

Just finished restoring back to virgin 4.2. In a way, I'm just glad to have a phone back!

Someone suggested that it is a bad idea to restore old data from an old-jailbroken backup. But, entering all my contacts by hand would be GRUESOME!!!

Any thoughts on this? Can I safely restore from an old, 3.1.2 jailbroken backup?

You can copy your contacts to address book and then sync them with itunes if you dont want to restore from backups.
I try to stay away from restoring from backups cause bugs and issues might be inherited.

Oh, right. Thanks! I think staring at an Apple logo for 2 days straight has fried my brain. :D

So, I need to set it up as a "new iphone" after restore?

Can I still sync my contacts and everything?

And will I still have access to my old backups, just in case?

What you would have to do first is restore from backup to get your contacts back to your phone. And then once you have the old backup installed go to itunes, click on your phone on the left and select the "Info" tab at the top. Then sync contacts with: and pick where you want them to be saved on your computer and sync so they can transfer to your computer.
Then you can restore the iphone again and setup as new. Then sync the contacts back thru that "info" tab.
