I just checked settings on my iPad and AG shows "last checked" on Feb. 14 then as soon as I opened the settings page it started swirling and updated to a release from today. I have not noticed on both the iPad and iPhone.

It seems that background updates aren't allowed for Adguard, please check the settings.
General recommendations:
1) In system settings, background updates should be allowed for Adguard (General-> Background App Refresh).
2) You should not swipe Adguard from the list of recent/launched apps. I'd like to emphasize that this behaviour is not unique for Adguard, but rather dictated by iOS.
3) iPhone/iPad is connected to WiFi when the update is scheduled.
Well, I'm a big dummy. I had that disabled. Sorry for the wild goose chase and thanks for the help.
I meet all this criteria and Adguard still doesn't update in the background over WiFi. I just opened the app and it said last checked 2/22/16.

Adguard uses the latest content blocker API and has the ability to add websites to a whitelist. It's been a while since I've used Adblock Plus but I found Adguard to be faster and more effective when I made the switch to it.
These are the lists I used to use with ublock. Some sites may break, but it didn't happen too often. YMMV.
Right now I'm using the new Adguard extension with almost exactly the same lists. But it only can handle 50000 entries (Safari restriction). It's a lesser burden on my old 2011 MBA with 4GB RAM while having 50+ tabs open.

Right now I am using ClicktoPlugin and the original Adblock, it works great but at times the 2015 Macbook Pro gets hot and it is not because I am playing any video, just that I have many tabs open but I can't figure out which website is causing this, could it be Adblock? What are the advantages of using Ublock or Adguard over Adblock?
It sure could be Adblock. You should definitely try out Ublock and have a better experience than with Adblock. I personally don't trust Adblock anymore. And if you're on Yosemite you should check out Adguard as well. It's a content blocker and (in ways that were explained here before) more effective and resource friendly than the old Safari extensions. And to my knowledge it's the only one right now that is at least somehow customizable (whitelist, etc.).

Btw. You mentioned you're using click2plugin, so I guess you are still having the Adobe Flash plugin installed. Flash hasn't been a good experience for me (and a lot of others) and I got rid of the plugin a long time ago. You should try living without it, especially for security reasons. There are only a few sites left that require Adobe Flash installed and if that's the case, Google Chrome is a good fallback option to browse these sites. Uninstall the Flash Plugin and try browsing without it for a few days. I'm pretty sure you're not going to miss it.

I don't have Flash on Safari, I only utilize Flash as a last resort with Chrome as some of the music streaming sites require it but I thought clicktoplugin blocks all plug ins which is why I still use it.
Sorry to go off-topic, but could any of you recommend a good cookie blocker? I'm currently contemplating a switch from Firefox to Safari and one my most loved Firefox plug-ins is Self Destructing Cookies. If I could find an extension that can replicate this plug-in then I think I can finally make the full time switch to Safari. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Nope and Ka-Block are open source and pretty decent. Nope is interesting b/c it's a dynamic content-blocker using the new API, disconnect's list - with the open source code for how it's translated it into safari's filter engine and also how to change the filters dynamically while safari is running.

I just compared the filters of some (Safari Desktop) content blockers and found out that the filters.json files of Ka-Block 2.5 and Adamant 1.3 (both downloaded from the Gallery) are 100% identical.
So, Adamant is just “rebranding” the open source filter from Ka-Block?

I have noticed on a few websites that Adguard protection is off, these websites are not in any whitelist I have created so I'm not sure why this is the case.

Could it be the "Acceptable Ads" AdGuard allows that you are seeing?
Me too. I'm finding Adguard now blocks zero ads on most sites.

I have the same settings as you and I'm just not seeing any difference. Can you give us a couple sites as an example. I just went to CNN, Cnet, and Drudge and checked with AG paused and paused and it seems to be working normally every site I visit.
