Apple has done too much gymnastics with the price already, I think they will maintain the $399 starting price.

I'm sorta half expecting/hoping that Apple really knocks it out of the park here, and adds both 3G and more storage at the same price points as before. But that would also have ramifications across their product line (starting with the iPod Touch), I think it's more likely they add 3G to the iPhone but don't change storage capacities or price.

Then in September, we see refeshes across the board, so now they can bump iPhone storage capacities. iPhone goes to 16GB and 32GB at $399 and $499, plus additional updates (faster CPU, maybe thinner body, more battery life, etc.) We also get similar updates to the Nano and Touch, the typical stuff we get every year from Apple.

It's very possible they also introduce say a 8GB iPhone model at $299 that might be inferior in other ways to the more expensive models. They have to walk a fine line between cutting price points to increase potential market size, and maintaining/growing revenue and profitability. But for sure over the long run, the starting price for the iPhone line will go down.

Whoa whoa whoa. Corect me if I am wrong in interpreting your post, but it seems to me that you said the following:

1. New iPhone in June same price more storage and 3G.
2. September comes, and we will have even better iPhones with more features and a new body maybe?

But the very first thing you said is that Apple has done too much gymnastics. If Apple were to do this, they would recieve even more boos than they did last year when they dropped the price. If early adopters of the iPhone 2 get screwed out of new features, they will be very pissed.

Please tell me I am wrong... because it seems like you wouldn't contradict yourself in such a way :eek:

Right. Which is why after 5 years the iPod is still the dominant MP3 player on the market, despite all of the challengers with so-called better designs and better functionality. The appeal has worn off dramatically since then...

I'm almost starting to think he's a troll. I mean the HTC touch over the iPhone? Really? People having trouble with the iPhone keyboard? Every review said it was the best they'd used. I was immediately used to it right after picking one up.

And the Instinct might be nice if it could actually work with a Mac. Most Samsung phones don't and they don't write their own drivers either. My Samsung Sync doesn't. Luckily it can bluetooth transfer.

I can see his explanation for people choosing different options, but it's not like thousands/millions if people didn't switch to AT&T. AT&T and the iPhone surely aren't a bad combination for the majority of people. I'm sure the limiting factor is simply price, not network or phone.

I would dispute that. I think AT&T is great. Never a problem with reliability, network, or service. And I've heard a lot of bitching about Verizon, Sprint, etc. Easily as much as I've heard about AT&T at the least. So while I wouldn't say it's necessarily the best, it's no worse than the others.

Same here. As I said before, my AT&T plan would also be $10 more on Sprint and $20 on Verizon. Most of the others are too.

Yeah, that's way too close. Two months? Not very likely. There will NOT be two updates before September, even if it came out yesterday.

That's two. I read plenty that loved it and I've used it and loved it. The first complains about the lack of a physical keyboard and the second complains about it's usability. The first one isn't exactly a good article as even iPhone owners were new to the technology then. Everyone has had phones with buttons, not many have had touchscreens—of course there would be more errors. Test the iPhone owners now, five months later. While the engadget complaints are valid, they can easily be remedied by an update (and might have been since 7/3/07 when that was posted).

Agreed... to me they aren't that different, just money grubbing like most large companies **cough cough** Apple! **cough cough** but the for me and from what I hear in the other parts of the cell world is that AT&T has horrible customer service and NO insurance plans for anything above a basic handset. I can't say anything about their customer service but the lack of insurance on a smartphone/expensive handset seals the deal, can't switch. And I am not too sure about servicing a damaged phone, will AT&T repair my phone for free?

I have had my bouts with Sprint on many occasions, and my fiancee has been double billed about three or four times already, but at the same time, when she lost her Treo at gun point, and when she lost it twice, and when it was severely damaged Sprint replaced it at no cost each and every time no questions asked and in a very timely fashion.

Piggy backing on the previous statements, for many people it's not just the phone that makes the experience easy going.

I repeat though, I agree with you, my opinion of most cell companies is deep in the negative.

I would dispute that. I don't know what services you have with AT&T but for me to get what I have with Sprint, even excluding the insurance, I would be paying $15 more per month.

About $40 per month

The taxes bring that bill up to about $65 w/the $7 insurance.

And I agree about the keyboard.... most users have gotten used to touch screen keyboards with the iPhone and other devices. That being said, many users may still find the iPhone keyboard a bit clumsy at times, and at other times it just doesn't get it right, and slows you down. Hopefully Apple will take a cue from the other manufacturers and give users more on screen input options, like XT9 or something new.

I'll tell you why I like AT&T - shared minutes + rollover = teh awesome!

My wife and I share 1100 minutes per month (added her for $10/month), and we get rollover. We've had about a 4000 minutes balance month to month. After our first month (3 years ago), we've never had to think about how much we talk on the phone. We've gone over our minutes a couple times, but with rollover, it didn't even matter.

Far as I know, AT&T is the only one that does that. Though maybe that's changed recently. But that alone is worth it for me.

First I'd like to say that I apologize for even thinking you're a troll. You're sensible. The iPod comment just rubbed me the wrong way.

Maybe the difference in pricing has to do with location?

My plan with AT&T is $39.99. But I'll add the data as it's included in the Sprint price and it's what I'll have on my iPhone so we're up to $59.99.
450 anytime w/rollover
5000 night/weekend
unlimited mobile to mobile
200 Text messages
Free roaming and long distance

On Sprint it's $69.99, same specs, except unlimited text messages and AT&T has rollover.

For me texting is pointless, especially when you can email for free. I'll never use more than 200 a month, just like I never use more than 450 minutes anymore and can't with rollover and mobile to mobile being free. Unfortunately for those that need them, I don't believe AT&T offers an unlimited text messaging option anymore. I checked: it does, but it's on a ridiculously expensive plan. I think on certain phones you can get a protection plan through AT&T, but I never get them so I don't know the details.

I found it. Unlimited messaging is $20 extra on AT&T. What a ripoff. At least the rest of the service is reasonable. I think I'm going to switch to a family plan when I get my iPhone though. We'll save a good bit of money since most of the people we know have AT&T.

20 dollars more? That is plain terrible. I am paying 5 dollars extra a month (verizon) for unlimited internet, 20 MMS and 300 txts. Damn AT&T.

16GB Iphone out now 3g ready

Just wondering has anyone else thought about if the new 16gb firmware will automatically update when the 3g service is announced?

Just a thought anyway.

No problem, didn't even notice (or forgot) that you said it.

I think it may be a location thing in some respects. I do know that the taxes in Maryland are high for Sprint. They charge me for stuff I never even heard of.

Texting is the same for Sprint $20 a month for unlimited... I'd rather just pay per text which I think rose to $0.20 now, used to be $0.05 when I started.

And yeah, those are where the cell companies really differ, rollover is something I would love to have with Sprint. And, the biggest thing keeping me from switching to AT&T, besides the speed of EDGE, is the lack of insurance on the iPhone. I have been spoiled by that.

I see that. I was going to say that I thought your taxes seemed high. Also, I'd rather pay per text too. It used to be .10 and free incoming, now it's .15 both ways apparently, which sucks because you get charged for other people messaging you, so it's like .30 a message.

I finally broke down and paid for "free" texting with t-mobile. My girlfriend, and all my under 30 friends text me all the time and it just started to add up.

HELL YEAH! I forgot about that. Incoming used to be free for a WHILE, then they got greedy and started charging you for incoming, outgoing, but not the ads they send you....

BUT

To stop getting the annoying ads you had to TEXT THEM BACK  to get your number off of a list.

WTF!

I would have ponied up the $20 or whatever it is per month for free texting, but even if it goes over $20 for one month I could almost promise myself it wouldn't do that the next month, leaving me with -$20 for a feature I didn't use.

I just had them all stop it unless it's really important. And really, if it's that important they can just call me.

Yeah, that's certainly crap. I never text to get removed. I'd never go over $20. I think I might have hit $5 or $10 one month in my entire life, when incoming texts were free that is. When I get my iPhone and I get 200 thrown in, I'll be set because I'll never use 200 even if incoming counts against it.

Does anyone have thoughts on the possibility of using VOIP on the next iPhone?

I read some basics on the Samsung Instinct, and it may be my next phone if AT&T doesn't step up the game with their service. I don't think it comes close to the iPhone, but it is certainly a step in the right direction (once I check out the keyboard that is).....

Is there any more info I could find out about that thing?

I do hope that the iPhone does get a 3G model sometime soon, if AT&T does play it's cards right with that, then maybe I would forgo insurance and grab an iPhone..... or just wait for it to come to Sprint.

I've never bought insurance for a phone (maybe I should have) so that won't be an issue for me. I will buy an iPhone when the the new model is released and I'm sure I'll enjoy using it but I wish I could choose my provider and not have to sign a two year contract.

Hello,

I recently purchased a brand new iPhone. After 5 days of use, I enjoyed it very much. The only real major thing for me was the Edge network speed. It was a pain browsing the web and youtube with Edge enabled other than WiFi. I started to read news websites, blog posts, and such saying that iPhone will be releasing 3G version. I am planning on returning the iPhone 2G and wait for the 3G version, since I DO and WILL probably use it more than WiFi. Will the iPhone 3G release in atleast 2-3 months from now? Or should I stick with my iPhone 2G.

And also, Does anyone know if Apple will UPGRADE any of the features of the iPhone if they do release the iPhone 3G (Ex: Camera zoom/flash and pixels, ability to delete messages and inboxes faster, things of these sorts)? Or are they ONLY upgrading it from 2G to 3G and keep the exact same features?

Thanks

Everything that we know so far is a rumor and nothing more. So do take what some people say with a large grain of salt. People love their iPhone more than their mothers and will catch feeling if you say anything negative about it, even if it's a sensible thing to say.

The next iPhone is rumored to have 3G, and with the SDK still in beta there are hopes that the App Store for it will open at WWDC, and provide 3rd party fixes for some of the missing features and applications.

Many of us, especially the long time fence sitters are hoping that this combination brings the iPhone up to the specs of some other "non-flashy UI" smartphones on the market. Or at least makes it a bit more feature rich than the current version.

So all signs are pointing to WWDC (June 9th) for a new and improved iPhone 3G, but some are also saying that new, redesigned and improved Mac Books will be out then too, so the rumor mill we keep on churning.
