On a side note, the activity app has helped me get off my ass, get on the treadmill, and I've already lost 3 pounds since last Wednesday. It's definitely helping.

Hey that's awesome. Keep it up! Sometimes it only takes something like a new gadget to change habits...

Hmmmm. I walk briskly around and between a number of office buildings. My exercise ring shows 0. I'm not using the workout app for these since it's usually 5 minutes at a time.

If 50 percent of the people in America exercised for 30 minutes a day, imagine how much better this country would be.

The exercise ring is fine. Just set a higher goal for your move ring. Now if you said the move ring was to easy to fill I could understand.

I agree. To the people complaining, you are the exception, not the rule.
Most people dont do 30 minutes exercise per day.

Hopefully a future update will allow the other 2 to be changed (exercise and stand)

How does one 'nip' to places?
What is the act of nipping?

Just yesterday I nipped over to the kebab shop for some take-away. Then I nipped home, murdered a brew and had my tea.

Me mum was going a wee bit doo lally, so I had to sort her out. Me mate was saying arsenal had a better midfield than QPR and I was like 'u wot? Don't be daft'

I'm another one with the opposite problem. It hardly counts any of my walking as exercise, even my more vigorous uphill/downhill walks. I'm a smallish person, fwiw.

However, when I lift weights I do use the workout app "other" category and I get full credit for exercise minutes. That surprises me. It feels like I get too much credit for weights and not nearly enough for walking. I also get tons of exercise minutes whenever I ride my bike, even if I'm just toodeling around.

I'm also having a tough time filling in the exercise ring. I did a lot of uphill walking this past weekend. Completely out of breath. I felt like dying and it just barely put a dent in it. I am 5'1". My HR is consistently over 130 during my workout and I guess it's just not rigorous enough. When I set my exercise timer for 30 minutes, it only counted 10 minutes for the exercise ring.

It is based off of heart rate and not the movement. Since it only checks every ten minutes you probably aren't getting credit for 5 minute increments of elevated hr. I would assume you could start a short workout app and get some credit though.

This seems like the wrong way to do it. If it's based on HR and it only takes HR every 10 minutes it can either easily miss a brisk walk. It also may think you are exercising when you aren't if you HR elevates because you are nervous or whatever.
I hope it uses a combination of movement and heart rate. And it should be(not sure it is though) smart enough to detect a steady movement like walking or running and activate the HR to "check" if it's elevated. If it is maybe it could check HR a little bit closer to see how much you're exercising.

In my experience I picks up exercise even if I just get up and walk around for a few minutes or If I walk the dog for 5 minutes it counts as exercise wether or not I start the workout app.

I agree with others here that exercise ring is way to easy and should be able to change it. Even if it didn't count some of my walking I would want it to be more. While I think it's great to encourage some people todo atleast 30 min a day lots of people out there strive for way more than that.

For people who are having an easy time filling up the exercise ring just by walking around - how tall are you?

I also couldn't figure out how to add time to the exercise ring. 30 minutes of working out is done by 5:30am for me lol.

I think you're probably right that the algorithim uses a mixes of movement and heart rate but the heart rate has to get above a certain % of max before it'll register as exercise. I sort of hope that an update will allow us to change the frequency of the checking. I would be willing to sacrifice some battery for a more frequent heart rate check.

That's great!

I suspect the 30 minute number is based on a general health recommendation, which most people don't do, and that in a future release they'll have a way to increase it.

It doesn't work, so what does it matter? I guess I need to tighten it up enough to cut off circulation to my hand.

Oh well. At least it knows when I stand up now!!!1111!!11221111!!~~~!111!

I actually think it works well for me. Both running and non-running activities.

For example, yesterday I did a 5 min stretch including dynamic stretching then walked about 2-3 minutes and then went on an easy 50 min outdoor run in an urban area (I had to stop 2-3 times for about 90 seconds total for red lights), then walked 2-3 min.

So technically my "workout" was just over an hour. The "ring" gave me 53 of 30 min of exercise. I think this is fair considering the first few minutes of stretching/walking like would more be classified as "move" than exercise. But it gave me 3 more minutes than my actual run which suggested my cool down walk was brisk enough and HR enough to count as exercise. And it may not have given me credit for standing for the 90 seconds at red lights.

I get similar results in the gym. 5 min stretching + 5 min easy walk + 20 minutes brisk walk with hills on a treadmill + 30 minute weight = 60 min. I usually get "credit" for a bit less.

I would say the fitness tracking and features have far exceeded my expectations. I've used a HR chest strap before. I used charts and on-line graphs to figure calories burned. I've used a very, VERY cheap GPS watch on occasion. I've used the Nike+ GPS app on my iPhone for years.

I've had my AW for 3 weeks and everything seems with in reason NOW. 1 or 2 of my very first workouts seemed off. But since then, very much what I would expect and a zillion times more useful than the Nike Fuelband I wore for years (which was ONLY good for those silly fuel points).

I do two 30 to 35 minute aerobic workouts a day, which usually averages out to be around 64 minutes of total workout time. I wish you could change the workout goal, because I always end up filling it twice. You did get awards for doing more though, so that's a bit of consolation.

For the move goal--I don't think that's a legit gripe. Just change the move goal, problem solved. If I do both my workouts right in a row in the morning, I've almost completed my 600 calories burned before lunch. Why is that a bad thing? It doesn't mean you then have license to eat whatever you want all the rest of the day--you don't want to "eat the calories" you just burned--but it does help you keep track of where you are as far as food intake vs. activity.

Exactly--just simply walking does not necessarily get your heart rate up high enough where you're in a significant calorie burning range--especially if you are in pretty good health and your blood flow is super efficient.

I'm 5'4 and only struggle to fill my exercise ring on days I'm very inactive.

I walk extremely quickly at all times, though, so if I go anywhere at all, it fills up quite fast.

Maybe it's a height thing as a small person 4 foot 11, I really have to push for it to recognise exercise.

I'm 5'1". I'm having a terrible time getting credit for exercise. The last two days I've been on 2-4 hour hikes and the center green exercise bar won't budge past one minute of exercise all freaking day. Even after the 4 hour steep canyon hike. And my calorie ring moves only half as much as 6'2" husband's ring does. There is even a discrepancy between time and distance between us with him getting credited for more distance and time on the Workout app even though we are together on this trip from morning until night and doing the exact same hikes. The only thing I noticed is his exercise ring on his standard activity app didn't move much either. We were definitely exerting ourselves on the uphill portions of the hike but even though our heart rates were up I guess canyon hikes don't count as exercise.

It's ridiculous though that I made the canyon hike and didn't get much credit for calories burned yet the watch started crediting me fast and furious when I was sitting on my ass on our tour bus for several hours! I seriously do not understand the fitness aspects of this watch.

Oh I forgot to mention whenever I get seriously pissed off about something it does register and credit me with exercise! That's so wrong from a health standpoint.

I don't understand the issue here to be honest. What's the real problem here? That you all "give up" when your rings are filled? Because the exercise ring is first and foremost for people like myself who get approx. 1-11 mins of exercise if I don't make an effort. But I'm almost at the gym everyday and if I'm not I go for a brisk walk/run at the end of the day.

If you're uncertain on your daily performance then raise the move goal to above 1500kcal/day.

I'm 6' 1" and my Exercise ring fills up very easily. It will fill up for non-exercise activity such as just walking around the office. Yesterday, half of my ring was filled (15 of 30 minutes), none of it real exercise.

I think Apple recommends that you calibrate the watch and it will record exercise minutes more accurately over time. Also don't forget to enter your vitals data correctly, such as your weight, age etc. (no lying!)

Initially when I first wore the watch, just casually strolling around the mall will record exercise minutes, but as time went on, I'd really have to put in some effort in order to get credit for exercise - for example, I would have to walk at a brisk pace, not just walk casually.

The way to calibrate the watch is, (I forgot where is the Apple link to the document), you must start an outdoor activity using the Workout app, best is either outdoor walk or outdoor run. Walk/run for at least 15 minutes, and if you have location/GPS enabled that will be the best. The watch will measure your heart rate, pace, count your steps, use the acceleratometer etc., to determine and calibrate what is considered "exercise" for you. As you do more workout over time, the measurements will become more accurate. During the initial calibration period, indoor exercise will not be as precise because the watch won't have GPS data to calculate your pace for example.

Thanks for the suggestion, I am going to try calibrating. Has anyone else had success getting more accurate results in the Activity app after calibrating?

Here are the calibration instructions from Apple:
