I noticed the difference when I tried on the ceramic in store. It's quite nice!
Not to be argumentative but in guessing this was placebo. Unless you somehow had really bright light shining at thenscreen (or they have their display units set differently). I don't believe the max screen brightness that can be manually set is even different. That isbto say, side by side, and indoors, the two units should be displaying the exact same brightness under all conditions. It is only in direct sunlight that the 1000 nits comes into play due to just how much energy is required to output that much light.

Another possibility is just a better crafted screen; it just looks nicer to you.

Again, just wanted to point this out because there are an equal number of people saying they see no difference indoors (a few even started angry threads) or even outside when the sun isn't shining directly at the Watch face (and this is why).

It might sound really silly, but after having a SS since April of 2015, I cannot wear a Sport without feeling like I'm going to scratch up the display. It was just too easy with the sapphire crystal on my SS to just go about my business and not worry about it scratching.

I am really considering a return of my Series 2 Sport and a SS purchase. How many of you have gone SS largely for the display crystal?

I like the look of the aluminum well enough and thought it might be fun to try a new color of metal (though scratches to that do concern me more than any SS scratches because they cannot be buffed out on the aluminum watch), but the display just makes me feel like I'm constantly going to be checking to see if I've damaged it.

Anyone else? I refuse to put a screen protector on it because I really do not like them. Am I being overly cautious about the ion X glass?

If you buy a sport just expect it to get scratched up. Mine has and I'm as delicate with it as a person can be. Its just the way it goes with something that is hanging out on your wrist. You will eventually bump it into something (without even realizing it) and you'll get a scratch.

I have one prominent scratch and many smaller hairline ones on mine. It is annoying but you get used to it... but I'm definitely upgrading to SS as soon as they are actually available.

What if SS was only $100 or $150 more, would any aluminum wearers get the SS?

Or perhaps some prefer the aluminum and still choose the aluminum model even if they were the same price.

If I did it again, I might go SS, but for the price, I don't care enough. It gets scratched up, just how it is. Adds character right? Normally I'd worry about resale like my phones/truck, etc. But with the AW I plan on using it till it dies or the battery gets shot.

But yeah, they do scratch. Not easily, but brush up against a wall or something and it'll scratch.

The pic on the lower right looks like aluminum space gray, but the crown looks like it has the black disc that SS models get. It's an aluminum model, right?

BTW, does the sapphire display go all the way to metal edge covering and including the "black frame" of the display?

See... this is exactly what I'd do to one. *cringe*

Granted, if you're wearing it with casual stuff mostly and it's your workout watch, prolly not a big deal at all. I wear my AW all the time and sometimes that means office attire. As a woman, I feel it doesn't coordinate well.

SS is available for next day DL and free 2 day from Best Buy

Indeed. Already have two on order from there (long story, the order system as gone berserk and I am only keeping one of them).

:D

$100 would be a contender for me, maybe. $150 is too big a leap. I'm thinking $50 would be a definite yes (thinking of sapphire mostly).

See? That's me. I quit wearing watches (except for on special occasions as jewelry) sometime around the late 1990s when I started carrying a cell phone all the time and I could check it to see what time it was. When the AW came around, I knew I'd had enough of the various fitness trackers I'd used and thought it might be fun, so I bought one. I have banged that thing into so many doors, walls, tables... and my sapphire display is pristine. I have little micro-scratches on the SS body, but none are large, despite the beating it has taken. The depreciation on the SS models is pretty terrible, but I was originally going to buy the Sport to wear for everyday and use my S0 stainless AW to wear for nicer, more dressy occasions, anyway. If I go with a S2 SS model, I could sell my first gen for a little bit to make up the diff between the Sport and the SS models, and that should do me just fine.

I think. Ugh. I wish there was a Sport model with a more scratch-resistant display. I like the lightweight feel of the
Sport model.

I love the lightweight feel of the sport watch also. I had the original SS with modern buckle and and banged up the case a lot wearing it for fitness activities and I hated changing bands. I am so glad that you can pair more than one watch with a phone now. I ordered the series 2 SS with modern buckle at launch and found with the increased wt and depth that it was just too big and awkward on my wrist and returned it. I now have a series 1 aluminum sport and new 1st generation SS with modern buckle (saved $400 on that at Best Buy) and this is a perfect combo for me. I'm not really worried about scratching the display on the Sport model as my fitness workouts are getting pretty tame these days.

I have a launch day Sport, still can't see a scratch on the screen even in direct light nor any marks on the aluminium body. Worn it every day bar two weeks when I was on holiday. I don't baby it but I don't smash it into walls either.

If I were to buy one again, I'd definitely go for the aluminium. I quite like the matte finish, and the Ion-X glass has been fine for me. Of course I'd like sapphire, but I don't think it's worth the fairly hefty price increase.

I love my sport, but is has some scratches. You just have to accept the fact they scratch more easily and they cost less. My scratches are small but I have 4 or 5 I can see. After less than 6 months.

It's a Space Gray Sport model, day 1 preorder. Had it since June 2, 2015 and has been worn every day since then. It's just the lighting on that picture that makes it appear that way.

Yeah, I do wear it every day including to work (IT Specialist, mostly indoors and casual) but I do put it though a lot sometimes.
Case in point, washing my truck:

That being said, it hasn't skipped a beat in 16 months.

You can buy watch dots its basically a vinyl sticker that gives the sport the stainless steel look.

It may be that that is the case. The store where I tried it does have some natural light, though and I was comparing to my first gen SS. Maybe it's totally my imagination. I have an active one. :)

Wow, surprised to see some of the scratches. All of our Sports have no real visible scratches on them; however, we are pretty careful with them. I've even hit it on walls, bricks, desks, etc. (and cringe as soon as I hear the contact), but they've held up surprisingly well.

Indeed. A colleague and I both bought our S0 watches when first released; his aluminum, mine SS. His didn;t look so good (casing and display) after eight months and now he does not wear it at all. My S0 still looked great (some case scuffing, perfect display) despite a few pretty good whacks on doors, desks, etc. Of course, he may have been totally careless and rough, so it might not be a direct comparison.

Yeah, I think it really depends on the owner. Before the Apple Watch I had the original pebble watch, which had a plastic screen and it got very marked up. I upgraded to the pebble steel, which had a glass screen and that got some scratches as well. I think I'm just usually hard on watches and need the sapphire screen

Some of these original new SS watches are selling on eBay currently at full price or above from a seller in China. Also some used ones selling for prices similar to Best Buy. I'm really happy with the deal I got on my 38mm SS watch with modern buckle from Best Buy!
