This is classic microeconomics.

Exactly. It's also something more people ought to have a basic understanding of...

Those of you who don't see the price as high should welcome my way of thinking, as that kind of thinking (multiplied by millions) will put some pressure on Apple to get more inline with the market.

Why do you think they don't?

I see the price as high, but was willing to pay it due to the other "values" provided.

I also have no problem with people choosing alternate devices and putting pressure on Apple. Choose whatever works best for you, the more competition the better for everyone.

My only problem is with immature/ignorant people who can't accept that others view things differently and resort to insults/name-calling.

This is classic microeconomics.

Apple has a wide range of consumers they can reach, and really only one price they can set for, say, an ipad mini with 32GB and lte support.

Some people will pay that price, and some people will balk at it. That's what sets size of the market. Apple seems content with setting a price for hardware that's much more expensive than the competition, knowing that many customers value their ecosystem more than others...

I consider myself a pretty big fanboy, but I balked. I balked at washed out colors for a $629 tablet compared to getting a comparable nexus 7 on ebay from a reputable seller for half that. I'm a fanboy, but I'm also cheap. I still like the apple ecosystem more, and I like the 3x4 form factor better, but I didn't see the value. I do in the nexus 7.

Those of you who don't see the price as high should welcome my way of thinking, as that kind of thinking (multiplied by millions) will put some pressure on Apple to get more inline with the market.

this is, in my opinion, the ONLY way of thinking that's reasonable.

Bought a 128gb w/cellular. Don't feel ripped off one bit. It was a choice I made, because of my needs/usage.

I also remember the press being surprised when they announced the price of the 1st gen, couldn't believe they did it for under 1k.

The 16gb price gets people in the door...the rest is made up in the price hikes for each model. Basically I look at it as we who buy the higher capacity models subsidize those that buy the 16gb model.

Everyone was impressed with the first iPad price because before it came out, everyone thought it would be running OS X (full desktop OS with all it's apps).

No we didn't. We already had a tablet that ran OSX full desktop with all it's apps. Was not the end all be all.

you know...one of my friends has one of those acer touchscreens... i hate windows but i have to admit - when we were working on a manuscript the other day being able to scroll was really handy....

but yes - when i first heard about the iPad i just assumed it was going to be a keyboardless computer... i'm not saying it should be, but that's definitely what i assumed before i started learning more.

Apple breathed the the breath of life into a 10+year stagnating tablet industry, just like they do with almost everything. I love when people quip that Apple doesn't innovate they just copy - no, they take something broken and fix it!

But i'm not sure a touch screen macbook wouldn't be super awesome!

OSX is a real OS, iOS is mickey mouse. Clearly they are taking it in the right direction though!

I take issue with the term "ripoff", as it suggests some sort of malice or fraud. Something being grossly overpriced can be called a ripoff, and I guess the case could be made the iPads are overpriced. But to me, you can't be ripped off is someone OFFERS you something, and you CHOOSE to buy it. It becomes a ripoff if they hid something from you, and you found out after the sale. You were ripped off.

Here, Apple is offering iPads for sales in several configurations at several price points to appeal to different people. You can choose to buy or not buy. 16GB is a very popular configuration. Many people don't need more than that, others can make do, others can't afford anything else. I just don't see the ripoff part. These things are selling like crazy. If it was "grossly overpriced", they would not be selling. But they are.

Do I wish I could buy Apple products cheaper? Of course I do. Is Apple ripping me off? Of course not.

If you desire to buy an apple product but the base configuration is not fit for purpose due to insufficient memory and they then offer identical product with more memory at a vastly inflated price I think this is a rip off. Why should I effectively subsidise the base model? To keep everyone happy just put in a user accessible memory slot. Come on Apple do the right thing, stop ripping us off on memory.
