The headphone issue

What happens if you use a regular headphone on the iPhone?

I know it has a different plug, but it won't work for music like an iPod? the adapters are only to use the microphone or do they correct any sound issues if you use a regular headphone instead of a headset?

as long as the plug fits or you make it fit/use an adapter, any standard headphones will work.

Couldn't you use Jarba EarGel's on the Headphones to make them fit in your ear? Thats what i planned on doing? Will that work at all?
