Apple's ordering system makes no damn sense. You ordered at 5:31am and I ordered at 12:30am. Why on earth is yours shipping before me ?

Meanwhile, I'm sure whoever orders the "larger iPad" is going to get their order right away! I'm getting frustrated with this wait. If feels like a royal screwup.

Not a royal screw up ... just a common thing that happens with new products. Look at the Retina Macbook Pro. Very similar delays, especially if you upgraded the flash drive. I waited an extra month because of that.
The first Intel Macbook Pro had a worse delay. IIRC, I pre-ordered it a few months before it started shipping.
But yes, I agree that it is very frustrating especially with the randomness of the shipping and the vague answers from Apple.
I hear you. I honestly wouldn't care, but first it was "Next Year", then "Fall", then "December 2013", then "January", and then now "February" (for me). "February" could literally mean Feb 28th ship date, which could really mean I'd get my machine in March.
The lack of information is really what bothers me. I run a business, and I've found that as long as I communicate with customers, they're understanding. If I told someone I'd deliver a design on Thursday, but realize I need more time, a simple email saying, "This is a larger project than I anticipated, and therefore I'll have it for you first-thing Monday morning." is all I need to do.
I can understand a new product slipping by a month. That's understandable, but now it's become quite ridiculous.
Well, I called Apple and when I told them of my travel issue and my dissatisfaction with the "January" issue, they offered to put it a new order where I would get it mid February.
With my need for speed being mostly in the winter and the rest of my winter projects bottlenecked by a film scanner, I chose to cancel my order outright. I asked the nice lady (Audra) to express my dissatisfaction with Apple over who gets the delivery first.
Hopefully, one of you nice chaps will move up the list.
Maybe Nikon will be happy that I now have cash in hand. 🙂

I completely agree. It's too bad that once a company gets the size of Apple, customer communication is no longer a priority.
Has anyone heard of any reports today where it went from "Processing" to "Preparing for shipment?"

Given that it's middle of January already, it seems very few of these have gone out to customers. I'm guessing there's a component supply constraint like the GPUs or CPUs, and hence the quick blanket February shipping date for most orders. I suspect whatever they're missing is going to arrive early to mid Feb, and we'll start seeing a lot of shipments after that time. 🙁
It didn't seem like they had any last Monday either. I only saw one stock unit go to prepare to shipment on 1/6.

I don't understand:
- why anyone complain about Apple not being focused on their customers
- why we need the most expensive computer we ever bought in our lives with the best specs ever...next week
- why we're refreshing our screen every 20 seconds to see if Apple changed the status
- and I could go on for a long time.
Listen folks, Apple told us it'd be a while. It'd be worth the wait and super expensive. But it'd be a while. AND YET...you (and I) ordered. Honestly, the fact that their marketing department made promises last year is irrelevant (BTW I'm a CMO of a public company) because the day we ordered Apple told us...yes...it'd be a while.
Just wait.

Hmm interesting. So I looked up the ship date of my Retina Macbook Pro and it was on a Monday but from China. Which is a big timezone jump from Texas where the Mac Pros are assembled.
Could that mean they don't ship much or any on Monday ? No idea, crazy theory.

Part of the fun is the speculation ... even if it drives us crazy. I get far more active on these boards anytime I order something from Apple.
Personally, I think Apple can do a better job at saying when they will ship or why there is such giant vague ship estimates. It's not like this is the first major refresh for Apple or the first new factory. Hell Tim Cook has been critical at Apple improving it's manufacturing times. That was during the days when Steve was CEO. Maybe Tim Cook isn't able to focus on these issues with the day to day CEO tasks as well. *shrug*
Communication is important.
I think that most of the complaints aren't so much about the wait, but about withholding all of the information about "the wait". Some get it early, some get it later ? I'm not losing $$ , but every day I do several things on my computer ( MP 3.1) that I know will be faster and more comfortable with the nMP.
Obviously you are a patient person and kudos for that, but I can't wait 😉
I'm surprised that there haven't been any leaks associated with people who know people who know people who work at the assembly plant.
Apple is really good at this secrecy thing !

Why risk your job for leaking things out. Not to mention, the workers know how strict Apple is about those policies and will sue the crap out of them.
In April of last year during the Q and A portion of Apple's annual earnings call, Tim was asked about the number of product releases in the fall of 2012 and whether he wished Apple had done things differently.

If you don't recall, the new iMac was announced in October, with the 21.5 inch shipping in november, and the 27 inch shipping in december. Quite similar to the current situation. Clearly, the situation with the Mac Pro is less than optimal purely on that basis. I'll echo everyone else's sentiment about lack of communication as well.
And lastly, like someone earlier in the thread said, after putting up with an old machine for so long, saving up money for a new one for so long, then waiting for this new one to finally be purchasable for so long, this last final wait is proving far worse than all the others. Using my machine now I can't help but get frustrated that I'm stuck in this limbo stage knowing I own but still don't yet have access to all that power.
I'm not grumpy or about to cancel my order or anything - but with Apple's usual style of under promising and over delivering, it's a little surprising to see this occur - especially for some of their more ardent and influential customers.
