Potentially interesting development from my Apple rep.
Supposedly she had a call from another customer earlier today (UK CTO Mac Pro customer with a 'February' ship date) to ask why her card had been charged - turned out that her order had changed to Preparing to Ship. Bizarre given the amount of unfulfilled January orders.

So the pre-authorization that Apple put on my credit card on the 16'th has disappeared. Either it timed out, or they retracted it. Hopefully it's the former.
I feel like we're waiting for the supply chain again. As someone else suggested, it may be the D700 cards...

I had the apple care charge on my card about 10 days ago. It stayed in pending for about 4 days then it went away. I have not had a charge since. 9 days left for them to ship.
Similar to me. I had AppleCare show up as pending on 1/14. It went away a few days ago.
Well, day 32 and no movement. I ordered at 12:42 PST and I am still showing "Shipping in January."
Frankly, seeing the huge number of orders created AFTER me that have shipped, has got me pretty disgusted with Apple. I will wait a week more is all. If they plan to ship to me on the last day of January, they will get a call from me canceling my order. $ 5 grand deserves more honesty than this.
I was jazzed for the nMP, but now I am just pissed.

the notion of canceling on january 30th when it would be extremely likely to ship on january 31st makes sense only if one never really needed the machine in the first place.
is this spiting a $500 billion company?
apple hasn't been dishonest. i would say that perhaps they have not been specific, but we have no indication yet that 'available to ship in january' is anything other than honest.
Watching the spreadsheet fill in around me reminds me of my elementary school years when we used to line up to be picked for teams in gym class. I was usually one of the last to get picked...

Actually, if you have followed this thread you would know that Apple reps continuously say that they are filling orders in order. They are not. That is more than simply not being specific.
Next time you hear about an airline not informing their on board passengers about delays getting to a gate to deplane, ponder the $27,500 fine PER passenger that the airline must pay. That is for the lack of information, in this case Apple has been dishonest.

Earlier on, someone posted that when their card was charged and their order status hadn't changed they got on to their sales rep and found that things had actually progressed behind the scenes.
I'm in that position so I contacted my "Apple friend" again to ask that very question about my order. Not entirely sure that she was that keen to hear from me again 😀 and she gave me stock answer 47B, anyway, so it was a bit of a waste of time. "That's a normal part of the process," she said, "Keep an eye on the order status page for more information."
Thanks, but I think I could've worked that one out for myself.
And, no, I didn't say that to her out loud. 😉
I need something to take my mind off this. Problem is, I work all day on my Mac Pro 1,1 under Lion and it's becoming more frequent to have to re-boot due to something weird happening, so the fact my new machine is a distant glimmer of hope isn't helping one bit.
Off to finish the rest of my pint of real ale...

That's pretty much the only thing I can get from Apple's telephone team - they don't seem to have any more access than that site does. Pretty useless.
Mate, we're just going to have to wait. I'm really disappointed Apple has given the local USA/Canada orders priority over the rest of the world, but what can we do?
The fact that it's taken more than a month to assemble less than 1000 of these machines is pretty poor. Someone should call Apple and let them know Flextronics is letting them down.
i have followed the thread, but pointing out a spreadsheet to a CSR making not much more than minimum wage as evidence of some sort of conspiracy seems a bit of a stretch to me.
FWIW, i'm waiting for an nMP, too.
while i would have preferred an exact ship date (or maybe even a week), apple told me "ships in february" and i still made the purchase. if they don't come through with that, then i have a right to be upset.
if not having a specific date was a deal-breaker, then why click purchase?
methinks some people made an assumption (false hope?) that "available to ship in xyz month" means theirs might be the one to ship on the 1st of that month.
apple's ordering system, thus far, has been honest albeit not very specific.
now, if you have an issue with some CSR 'lying', then that's a different matter. i'm sure that dealing with iMacs, iPods, iPhones and every other device far outstrips the few questions they field re: nMPs, and i'll wager the stock answer of 'orders are fulfilled in the order in which received' probably applies to the overwhelming majority of products. i don't think it is part of some bigger deception.
still, will canceling your order on jan 30th harm apple, or will it be cutting off your nose to spite your face?

I don't. It's an estimate based on only what I'm seeing reported on the net. Apple store demo units, journo review units, our spreadsheet, YouTube, twitter, it barely makes a 1000 units, even when you multiply it by two.
Unless they are making a whole bunch of units no-one is buying before the make the CTOs...

January is a specific range of dates, all days equally valid, in light of the times the orders were placed. That is not what is happening.
Imagine: you line up in line at an Apple store waiting for the store to open to get the latest i-something. An Apple employee comes out and says, everyone to the lamppost will get a device by the end of the day.
Then line starts moving, but then an Apple employee comes out and inexplicably pulls people out of line behind you, and you see them exiting the store, with their new device. When you question what is going on, Apple says, "we are filling the orders in line;" and nothing else is said.
The some person behind you says, " What are you griping for? They said we would all get one by the end if the day."
Right.
I wonder if the out-of-order fulfillment is based on the specific variation that was ordered? Keep in mind that there are 144 variants of the new Mac Pro.

I got the 8 core/D700 and generally speaking I am seeing improvements on export of "only" 25-45% vs a late 2012 27" maxed iMac. The OpenCL in PPro has a way to go. It's still an hour saved for every 4 rendering (i.e, 3 hours instead of 4) so that's a huge plus. I just know the hardware can double that easily - 90% to 100% if the software is written correctly.
FCPX is written correctly (well, playback was actually slower for me vs Premiere Pro CC, but exports much faster). But I can't get my head around it. It's just far too different and lacking basic things like audio crossfades and a proper titler that drives me nuts. But it is fast.
Never mind the Mac Pro...what kind of coffee machine is that? It looks pretty fancy!
