@DeanCorp @PBG4 Dude @H_D @Matt2012 I know this is an order/delivery thread, but a quick question on 14” M5 Max. I’ve watched/read reviews and it seems like the consensus is that all the M-series Max SoCs in general run too hot for the 14” chassis with throttling especially on sustained workloads. I bought a 16” M5 Pro 64GB (in signature) prior to really ramping up my local AI work. Now I’m considering selling to get the M5 Max 128GB. The M5 Pro is doing reasonably well, especially with qwen3.6 and Gemma 8-bitQuantized 32k context but the 64GB isn’t enough to run 70B models like llama at 8-bit. Also, because I would like to have RAG capability with a lot of work documents, I discovered larger context allocation requires a fair amount of memory in addition to the model itself and then as I add any agents/tools to the mix (along with daily apps I use) this further taxes memory. I’m actually thinking even 128GB may not be ideal a year from now (for me) and probably should just hold out for an M5 Max or Ultra Studio with 256GB+. Anyhow, just want opinions on the 14” M5 Max. How is prompt processing, time to first token, and token/sec with the extra memory bandwidth? Pretty sure you’re all going to chime in that it runs extremely hot and throttles but wanted some real world experiences not just professional reviewers. I saw Notebookcheck’s review but I also saw a couple reviews on YouTube that said they had to exchange their 14” M5 Max’s because performance dropped way off and after getting a replacement from Apple the 14” performed like it should within 10-15% of the 16” M5 Max (albeit with lots of fan noise). I probably should either get the 16” M5 Max or wait for the M5 Max Studio but wanted your guys’ impression if you dealt with a 14” M5 Max. Thanks!

I would not be happy to have coil whine in a $4300-$7000 laptop. Not that I’d hear it given the tinnitus I have in my right ear from 18 years of Intel MBP fans running lol

My honest advice is wait for WWDC and buy a suitable Mac Studio instead. I hated my 14 M5 Max after owning an M4 Max which was great. I LOVE my 14” M5 Pro which experiences none of the issues I encountered on the 14” M5 Max. I think that’s the main reason for the redesign as the existing design has resulted in poor thermal cooling for the existing enclosure.

I mainly a PC user but wanted to try a new, powerful Mac to cut down on noise and heat. I didn't really want a laptop but that was my only choice (and still is now in June) due to no M5 Studio.

I got a 16" M5 Max purely because of the supposed, better thermals but it got quite hot when running longer tasks (Topaz Video AI) above the keyboard and that was with the laptop open and the screen off. I probably could have lived with that but it would have a been a little concerning over time running many longer tasks.

What made me return it was the noise it made under load. I'm over 50 and partly deaf but man, the constant noise and the pitch it made was unbearable to me. My 5090 PC was far quieter than the laptop doing the same tasks but I guess that's down to the PC having several larger 120mm radiator fans where the fans can spin slower but the Mac having much smaller fans spinning much faster. I'm not sure what the coil whine noise actually is but the Mac just sounded really bad to me. Its weird to say but it sounded 'cheap' like those little handheld fans you could buy a kid.

Doing normal stuff, it was fine though - quiet and no heat but then you don't really spend £5k+ on a laptop to do normal stuff.

As for Ai, I do video stuff and heard of 'Draw Things' for Mac but ultimately, a lot of models are built on Nvidia/Cuda so some just don't work on Mac even using Draw Things very well at all. Those that do had more quirks and ran far slower.

Ultimately, trying to get any machine on whatever platform to do heavy, sustained loads just isn't possible without heat and noise.

I'm bored of waiting for M5 Studio now but the new Windows/Nvidia partnership announced at Computex this week using the RTX Spark stuff has now peaked my interest.

Thanks for the feedback. I think I’ll just wait for a Studio Max/Ultra. It would have been great if Apple offered 128GB with an M5 Pro, but then again I think a Studio Max/Ultra with the extra thermal headroom and much higher memory capacity is the way to go as far as local AI is concerned.

There’s a thread on here about M5 Pro/Max coil whine. Seems to be hit or miss but for those that notice it, it seems to occur under heavy load (low power mode eliminates it). Here’s and example of what it sounds like. It’s usually very faint but very annoying in real life.

My M5 Max doesn’t make that noise in the link you provided. I’m still at the beginning of my AI journey so I don’t know about things like RAG yet. I do know the only noise my MBP makes when it gets worked up is fan noise.

I use istat menu to max out my fans if I’m rendering since that just runs forever and will throttle compared to default fan profile, but my AI stuff usually doesn’t run longer than a couple of minutes so under the default fan profile they are just starting to ramp up when AI returns its result.

Running qwen3.6-35b-a3b with a 262K context window uses 66GB just to boot so I think 128GB is enough to use this model for coding. Trying to get the model to work through Claude so I can connect the model to Xcode for assistance.

So for fun I just told this model to write me a short story about a penguin who got sent to the moon. (First thing I could think of for a random test.)

Time to first token was 2.52 seconds, and generated 70.6 tokens/second. Afterwards, RAM usage had increased by ~1GB. Total tokens were ~3.3K.

No fans since this only took 47 seconds. No coil whine either. Machine was silent.

I ordered a 14-inch M5 Pro with 48GB RAM on 5/29, and got the shipping notification on 6/3. It's coming from Vietnam via UPS and scheduled to be delivered on 6/11. Does anyone know what route it takes, and the flight numbers? I'm just curious in the same way when we would track our iPhone delivery-day orders. Thanks!

I don’t have flight numbers but my MBP went from Hanoi to Hong Kong to Anchorage to Memphis to Front Door (West Coast).

@PBG4 Dude Thanks for the feedback. I went back and re-read some posts. You don’t use yours in clamshell mode, correct? I only ask because that’s how I use my MBP 80% of the time. So that I am sure would also affect my heat/noise/performance. I also use iStat Menus and I’ve only got my 16” M5 Pro fans to kick on when running Cinebench and the 3DMark Steel Nomad rasterized benchmark (interestingly the Solar Bay Extreme ray tracing benchmark did not kick the fans on so maybe the ray tracing in the new GPU cores are super efficient) and only when running extended prompts fans will spin up to about 25% if qwen or Gemma take more than 90secs generating responses. And even then it’s a nice low swoosh and not anywhere near my old Intel MBP. It’s been so pleasant to not hear the fans at all always 0% during normal computing.

More than the CPU/GPU it’s the 128GB that I really wish I had. I can’t run qwen3.6’s full size context and 8-bit quantization in 64GB (not comfortably). In order to take advantage of RAG, I need to install a tool that creates a vector database of my documents and then feeds relevant documents to the context window for processing. This approach is intended to avoid exceeding context window size by injecting only relevant information rather than entire documents to the model’s context window. And while that is great for 64GB, and 32k context is probably sufficient for my use now, getting everything to work and fit in 64GB requires a bit of tweaking, qwen, context, any agentic tools. 64GB is great to get started with local AI, but 128GB is really the sweet spot for >70B parameter 8-bit models with large context and associated tools/agents.

Ran your prompt for a short story about a penguin to the moon using qwen3.6 35B 8-bit 32k context (Penguin was named "Barnaby" lol). 55.4t/s, 3,071 toks, 41sec. Zero fans. I can set it for 262k context the max for the model but I'm left with about 7GB left for any tools or RAG, so 64GB is kind of tight if I want higher precision and large context. For 64GB, a 4-bit model is great as it takes roughly half the RAM so there's plenty of room for agents/tools. But I give up precision/accuracy and risk more hallucinations. Might not even be a problem for my uses, I'm not coding which in that case it would be a bigger issue, but just knowing I can comfortably run higher precision/higher parameter models is what I'm looking for. I will see if WWDC announces any new Studios/Minis before I make a decision. At minimum, I'd have a lot more flexibility with 128GB so that is definitely what I'll want to have later this year.

Here's my memory with Safari (8 tabs), Excel (2 worksheets), Mail, Calendar, Preview, Parallels 26 with a Win11 VM. Not even including Teams which I use often (and this takes a few gig), this is my standard day without any local AI. Zero fans.

Here's my memory with all the above and qwen 8-bit 32k context running. No agents or tools and no processing just a model in memory. I'm right around 7GB free which fills up quickly depending on what I'm doing. I see compressed memory go up but no swap.

For fun, I loaded gpt-oss 120B 4-bit 32k context, and immediately went to swap. Took about 90 seconds before the model even started responding and then I could probably type faster than the output. Clicking on just about anything on my Mac resulted in a spinning beachball. 128GB would allow for running that larger model at least in 4-bit (though I'd need even more memory to run 8-bit since it takes 124GB just to load the gpt-oss 120B 8-bit model).

Didn't even realize I watched this thread, and don't visit much, but - yeah.
I'm running Qwen-Coder-Next 80B (q4/4-bit quantization) on my M1 Max MBP. It's a bit rough, as it can spike into system shutdown/hang territory, but running with 64K context via llama.cpp. I'd call this 'as far as the poor M1 Max can go and the current memory.' I've got a bit more fine-tuning, but it's usable and Qwen is amazing in getting to initial response, and overall response quality.

No matter the chassis, the MBPs are going to still thermal throttle slamming bigger LLMs on them for any period of time.
I'm personally waiting on the announcement and pricing of the M5 Ultra Studio - either 256GB, or *choking* 512GB, but suspect the former considering RAM pricing nowadays. I'm going to keep the old girl M1 Max 64GB around bit more, but shift anything. > 7B to the Studio to serve across my network/cluster, as the M1 Max is still pretty competent, just memory constrained in going any further, and I want to see what the 'MacBook Ultra' actually is. I don't travel very much nowadays, so I'm good to wait another year or so on the MacBook / laptop replacement, as long as the Studios become attainable. One bit to note - most of the LLMs aren't overly CPU bound, but the memory AND the memory bandwidth are the big deals here, assuming not trying to run on a potato, etc. If the M5 w/Ultra is unobtanium, and I can find a 256GB earlier gen Studio refurbed or by a non-scammer seller, I may wind up going that route. We'll see come next week I suppose.

Yeah the CPU isn’t the bottleneck. It’s primarily memory size… that’s the gating factor on model size, quantization, and context/kv cache. Especially since I run a couple VMs and standard office apps for work and want to have local AI running concurrently. More GPU cores and memory bandwidth help quite a bit with prompt processing/time to first token (which is a big portion of the overall time), but I haven’t seen a huge leap in tokens/sec between Pro and Max based on online videos and oMLX results. So I could live with an M5 Pro if I could pair it with 256GB.

I’m not confident Apple will announce any hardware at WWDC but would be great if new Studios were on the agenda for a mid-summer order/delivery.

Yeah, I’m sort of coming a bit full circle here as well. I stopped building desktops/towers long ago, although I did have some rack servers, and ‘laptop only’ for quite a while other than I have a mini-rack of a few Lenovo Tinys, a couple of NUCs, Pis, an Orin Nano and a few similar-to-pi embedded dev boards - the Tinys and NUCs I run mostly in an HA Proxmox cluster for Home Assistant, databases, a pair of Linux dev environments, databases etc… and also a few MCP servers for some of my projects. They also serve as a pinned ‘main’ environment which is the git branch matching production for some of my stuff, plus a dev branch environment.

I never thought I’d buy another desktop-type or full server again, but here we are. I have my own ai agentic framework I’ve built which is in place across all of my projects, which led to paid token/credit reductions of near 90%, so I can get a LOT done relatively cheaply, but I’d still prefer local. The math doesn’t always math well, e.g. a $5K+ Studio would pay for years of paid AI use, but I’ve been in the ai/ml industry, want to do a fair number of experiments, and I dont particularly trust pricing from the big boys (openai, anthropic, etc.) to hold constant, while the push for smaller models, limited activation, MOE etc. continues in pretty impressive ways, so I’m just going to suck it up and go for it, and do some bake-offs comparing my 80B Qwen-Coder-Next vs Qwen 3.6 35B and see if it’ll at least suffice for when I do occasionally travel.

You ay be right on the bandwidth, but it will depend on the model (mostly size) and if it’s single user or multiple. I dont want to run e.g. ‘full Deepseek 361B (or whatever its at, I think that counts right but..), but I do want to run a few different models in parallel, all of which may be engaged concurrently. Not to mention some of Apple’s oddball memory configurations vs chip etc.

I dont know WTH to even say if Apple doesn’t announce the new Studios at this point.
 
In a related post for this thread, where has @elephantstone been? Last seen May 20. They were going to be out of town a few days and then take delivery of their new MBP. Radio silence since. I know the M5 series is quite awesome, but no reason to leave the community in limbo without an update. 🙂

I find myself leaving mine in low power mode and very impressed with its battery life.

I had a 16-inch MBP M1 since its launch. I wanted to try a 14-inch MBP because of the weight and cost difference. I did everything on the 14-inch to see if I could work with it. A lot of the time, I had to make compromises on screen resolution, text size, toolbars and menubars. (My eyes aren't as good now.) I really wanted it to work. It was an amazing computer. With its small weight, it felt good carrying it around. But everyday, I would wonder if I could live the compromises. So, with 1 day before my return window closed, I went to my local Apple Store to do the exchange. Using a 16-inch MBP again, it felt right to me. I have enough space on the screen to not live with compromises.

So that's what I thought of it.
 
Recently ordered a grade A, refurbished CTO Space Black 16” MBP M4 Max, 128 gig RAM, 8TB SSD. What an absolute screamer and most beautiful machine. Fastest shipping and extremely well packed from MacPro-LA. Tony the manager delivers excellent customer service. Machine was flawless out of the box and cosmetic grade A. The only issue I developed- the 140W Apple charging block died- I called Tony and he immediately shipped out a new one. It arrived the next day (or I could have gone in person same day, but wasn’t going to fight LA traffic esp with World Cup going on).

The have an excellent in-house 1 year warranty. When it runs out next year, I will purchae Apple Care.

Will definitely not to hesitate to buy from MacPro-LA again in the future.

I replaced it with a 16-inch MBP with M5 Pro (18c CPU/20c GPU/16c NE), 1TB SSD, 48GB RAM in Space Black.

I had a 16-inch MBP M1 since its launch. I wanted to try a 14-inch MBP because of the weight and cost difference. I did everything on the 14-inch to see if I could work with it. A lot of the time, I had to make compromises on screen resolution, text size, toolbars and menubars. (My eyes aren't as good now.) I really wanted it to work. It was an amazing computer. With its small weight, it felt good carrying it around. But everyday, I would wonder if I could live the compromises. So, with 1 day before my return window closed, I went to my local Apple Store to do the exchange. Using a 16-inch MBP again, it felt right to me. I have enough space on the screen to not live with compromises.

So that's what I thought of it.
Costco is always the best since you get 90 days if they carry your spec MBP
