I personally believe the internet got worse because of the users themselves. People are very protective, do not want to engage, and everything is so moderated any criticism will get you banned from everywhere. That and everything started is meant to be a business, back then people just created to share with others and socialize.
The other thing is everything is so centralized and probably the whole internet is like owned by 30 corporates. While centralization has its good sides (Wiki has articles on anything you can imagine), it killed the "humane" part of the internet where every site was personal and had different community.
As a long time internet citizen, I can assure you that the best thing you can do is get off the internet and go live the real life and keep the internet as a side thing. touch grass, meet with friends, and go out with family, and enjoy real hobbies.
