I just successfully jailbroke and unlocked a 16gb 3gs on 3.1.3 ... was sitting for a few weeks as I jumped the gun when spirit jail break first came out. It is an untethered jail break and unlock by the way!!!!
I am tempted to try my luck on the 2nd 3gs I have on 4.0 ... If so I will give an update.

Dont even bother.
Nothing will JB or activate a 4.0 3GS at the moment.
Give it some time. There will be options.
Just update your 3G to official 4.0 thru itunes.
Then redsnow to JB and point it to the 4.0 GM to JB it.
And ultrasnow thru cydia to unlock.

Actually, Redsn0w 0.9.5-3 recognizes the release version without the need for the old-ipsw trick.

So I can't unlock a 4.0 3GS until the PwnageTool 4 comes out? Well, that sucks. I may not be able to sell this thing after all. Has the Dev Team given any time table for the release? I'm pretty sure the guy I'm selling to wants 4.0 on it before he buys.
dats definitly true...
redsnow 0.9.5 works for the iOS4.0 build only for the 3G...not for the 3GS...
so u definitly hav to wait till a new JB tool is released for the new OS on 3GS...
although i do hope it does come out soon..
m gonna try unlocking 3.1.3 with baseband 5.12 wit the new ultrasn0w 0.93..lets c how it goes..wil let u know..
Once you have updated your baseband I understand that you are not able to get cellular service in 3.x. I may be wrong, but that's what I heard.

3GS? You had 4.0 then reverted to 3.1.3 then JAILBROKE and UNLOCKED? Explain how.
I've jailbroken, but haven't tried unlocking, hence why I asked. I updated again to 4.0 but was wondering if it was worth downgrading again to unlock. I hope Pwnage 4 comes out soon.
How did you (exactly) jailbreak? When you install 4.0 it installs (on a 3GS) the new firmware, that cannot be jailbroken. So to unlock a 3GS you have to have 3.1.3. I'm just trying to figure out how I can downgrade.
Just download 3.1.3, downgrade using DFU mode, use iRecovery to boot it back up and you're running 3.1.3 on 4.0's baseband. I want to know if I can unlock it that way since the new unlock does unlock 4.0s baseband...
Otherwise, I guess I'll wait a while longer to sell this thing.
How bout you install ultrasnow via cydia and let us all know if it works. Can you do it now and report back so i know if i should toss out 4.0 and go back to 3.1.3 till the 4.0 jb and unlock is out?
I need to downgrade back to 3.1.3 and I don't have the time tonight. If the buyer for my phone emails me tomorrow and says he'll take it with 3.1.3 unlocked, I'll do it. Otherwise, let's all just hope the Dev Team releases the tools to Jailbreak 4.0 tomorrow or sometime soon.
