Do ad blockers actually stop ads from being served up to your device, and result in (recorded) lost "impressions" for the ad network – with financial implications your favorite websites?

Correct. The ads are never loaded so the impressions are not counted. Using content blockers will result in your favorite websites earning a lot less money, and will ultimately force at least some of them to shut down or reduce staff as operational budgets are slashed.

I can see why Apple has done it. The reloading issues people complain are apparently greatly diminished on lower RAM devices with content blocking enabled. And a lot of advertising on the web is leading to some really poor user experiences. On top of this, most people accessing content from an iPhone or iPad have capped data plans and 10mb pages quickly eat into monthly allowances. When you strip away all the ads and trackers and pages drop to well below 1mb, you can see another compelling reason to use them beyond removing simple annoyances.

I can also see why Marco pulled Peace. There are a lot of good people in the Apple community who are about to lose their jobs as a result of the use of these blockers. He really doesn't want to feel part of the problem that led to that.

We can hope that eventually all of this will lead to a better web for everyone with advertisers adopting more user-friendly methods to get their messages across. But there will undoubtedly be something of a bloodbath while all of this gets worked out with the smaller operators hardest hit - valuations of assets plummet, bigger media companies acquiring what's left of any value on the cheap.

Purchased Peace because of Marco. After reading this thread, I decided to try to get a refund. Not becuse of the money but rather the dropping of the app after a day. Not cool Marco!
Will try Purify next. Thanks for all of the reviews of these apps.

I feel the same way... Ghostery also posted an explanation of pulling the app. For them not to understand the popularity of which Content blockers will have on iOS... Seems dumbfounded.

Marco is a well-established dev & using Ghostery as a database... Of course they would had gotten a lot of attention. But I received my refund... I was using Overcast, now.. Using the Podcast app.

Purify dev mentioned on Twitter that he will be adding a reporting function in a future update.

I'm really enjoying Purify!

Tried 1blockr for free and not impressed especially you have to pay 3usd to get the full functionality and some Arabic sites doesn't load properly.

Giving adMob a try, free and support Arabic ads.

Hah, same here.

Seems to be working just fine, need to test it some more first, though.

edit: And thanks for the heads up tophril!

I got lucky that I saw the message that it was free for s short time. I'm a bit obsessed with content blockers right now, especially if it's free

Vivio is nice and does a good job, but it doesn't block sponsored ads like Purify.

Purify is still the quickest for me. I need to quit downloading these content blockers. Haha

Vivio works fine but it doesn't block ads in popular french news sites lemonde.fr and lefigaro.fr

Thanks. I hadn't checked out Vivio much yet. I'm still looking for a cheap content blocker. The price of purify is the only reason I haven't tried it out yet

I understand.

I was hesitant to try Purify after the Peace debacle, but glad I did. Purify is darn good. BasicGreatGuy's review of Purify is spot on and he had his reservations before testing it out.

Hey, Ghostery,

So, according to Ghostery, Marco didn't make the right kind of app. Got it.

The backpedaling by both is so ridiculous. After months of development and beta testing, light bulbs goes off and they realize their ad blocking app actually blocks ads.

Yeah, I'm leery of spending 3.99 on a content blocker (but somehow 2.99 was fine? Maybe because it was Ghostery-based?).

Purify is better than Peace and it appears the dev won't have an attack of conscience, realize his app blocks ads and quit. :D
