Hello! I have gone through a sort of models through iPads, however, each of the, didn’t stick around for too long as I felt like they were simply put, too heavy, too large, and cumbersome to hold. I use a 12.9 inch iPad Pro for all of my notes, and as awesome as it is, it is too large. It stays on my desk, and I never hold it. The iPad and pencil with notability is the absolute best way I have ever taken notes, so I cherish the device. However, using it in bed or on the couch was not happening.

I have used a 10.5 before, and tried a friends 9.7, and I didn’t like those either. I decided I would give the 64GB iPad mini 5 a shot, as I really would like something larger to use in bed, on the couch, and still take notes with and bring to school (I don’t bring my 12.9 to school). Anyways, point is, I adore this machine. I can hold it comfortably, it’s powerful, and I can do all of my notes! Heck, I can even easily pull of my math notes in class without having to bring out my Mac.
The mini 5 is awesome, guys. If you have a laptop already, and are wondering about getting an iPad...don’t disregard the mini. It is a perfect little tiny device.

This post is perfect. Glad I came across it. I bought the Mini 5 and thought, damn I want the Pro now. Then as I’m on my way to exchange the mini for the iPad Pro I realized, I don’t think for my needs that the Pro is worth it for it’s price and cost...overkill. So I cancelled the order for a Pro even tho I could’ve got a 256gb 11” for 799.99. But that’s not including apple care plus for another $130 then a case to protect it. I got my mini 5 for $492 after taxes with apple care plus and a Smart Cover and thought to myself I’ve always wanted the mini but it was so old (mini 4). Now with it having the A12/better internals and the speakers aint bad either, I’ve decided to keep it and hopefully for many years.

Well said!

Ignore my typos guys, I was still getting used to the software keyboard...hahaha.

Mini5/2017 12.9 “squad”

Haha

Thoroughly enjoying the mini5 especially coming from a 9.7 pro for a few years (sold a few months ago). My wrists are appreciating the change in size

The 12.9” iPad Pro is a beast lol it really is! But with that being said, I feel the same way you do about your Mini 5, as I do with my iPad Pro 11” 1TB model. The iPad Pro 12.9” is 40% heavier and that’s a pretty drastic difference.

I’m sure the iPad Mini 5 is versatile, but I feel like someone could get the same experience on a iPhone XS Max that is more pocketable, 25% more ram, and much smaller, with the same cpu.

^ instead of already owning a phone, and 2 or 3 iPads just for different iPad requirements .

It’d be a phone, and an iPad as the only items to carry.

Maybe I’m wrong. I have zero experience with iPad mini’s and I’ve just started using iPads since earlier this year all together.

It is only a thought.

Whoa. Why the 1TB? If you don’t mind me asking. Also, I own a plus phone, and the mini is incredible for its versatility for me. I do all of my note taking on the iPad. Being able to pull up my Calc notes in class on this thing is fantastic.

You get 50% more ram, 6GB in total to use for intensive applications. So, the storage is really just a nice extra on top. But the ram is one of the best added bonuses for a iPad Pro 1TB. I parted ways with my extreme desktop PC, and have moved over to the iPad being my only computer. And so far it has proven capable of exactly that.

This is my first time using iPads this year, and I must say I’m hooked.

So, I can see why people are so partial to the mini 5 especially since it had not received love or change in so many years.

As far as I know, isn’t the additional ram just for helping with storage allocation and the difference between the non 1TB model and 1TB model in memory very negligible?

I dunno who started that rumor. But, it’s false I’ve been working on laying it to rest for some time now.

All iPads have 7% of there ram utilized. No ram is used for storage space on any models, no matter how large the storage space may be.

64/256/512gb iPads have 3.6Gb of ram

1TB iPads have 5.6GB of ram

So it is 2GB more no matter how you slice it, all useable, all available to iOS and applications.

And yes you can use more than 4GB of ram on a iPad with some intensive applications, or if your just plain trying to see how much ram you can use on purpose. I’ve gotten up to about 5.3GB of ram utilized before, pushing as hard as I could.

So should I keep the iPad mini 5 that I got for $492 after taxes and apple care plus or exchange it for the iPad Pro 256gb for about $990 after taxes with apple care plus on it? Or is too overkill and not worth it? Would the mini be a better value for my money to complement my 2015 MacBook Pro for schoolwork etc.?

Just get the 256GB and use the money saved to buy the next iPad Pro.
No thanks. What a drive by post. Lol. If you read, I already have a pro.

I would certainly keep the mini 5 especially if you have a 2015 MBP, which is still a great machine too.

Or buy a 1TB model, and when you sell it you get more to put towards the next iPad Pro lol! Your always gonna pay, maybe now or maybe later. I’ve always bought the cheapest entry level unit of any kind of electronic device, phone, tablet etc. etc. with Apple offering a advantage with there top tier iPads other than just a lot of storage, it make sense. I can only assume Apple will do this next year too.

It sounds like you’ve already got a great setup then
