Why would it be any thicker than the new iPod touch?

And the next full sized iPad will most likely be as thick as the iPhone 5.

They didn't make any mistake with iPad 3. The thickness is a result of a very careful design process after balancing the need to go with retina display and keep the same battery life as iPad 2.
