Iphone so powerful. Samsung cries in the corner ;D
It's easy to make it fast by overclocking it, there's tons of people complaining about overheating. Battery health goes down so fast when it is so hot. But some people don't even notice cause they have a case on and can't feel it.

I use it all the time as a flashlight. It's great.
I was just going to say this. With a newborn, quickly hitting the button as a flashlight in the middle of the night has been great. I don't have to interact with the screen, just press the button.

That said, having additional multi-press options would make it more than just a glorified light switch.

Apple's upcoming iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus models are widely expected to inherit the Action button first seen on last year's iPhone 15 Pro models. The Action button replaces the traditional Ring/Silent switch – a staple of the iPhone since it launched in 2007. For users unfamiliar with the Action button, here's a rundown of its functions – including some new features that iOS 18 will bring to the table for all iPhone models with an Action button.

The Action button replaces the single-function switch used to toggle between ring and silent, offering additional options so users can choose between quickly accessing the camera or flashlight, activate Voice Memos, Focus modes, Translate, and accessibility features like Magnifier. Users can also associate it with Shortcuts for more options.
A press-and-hold gesture with fine-tuned haptic feedback and visual cues in the Dynamic Island ensure the new Action button launches the intended action, which users can customize in Settings and assign to different actions.

Existing Action Button Functions

Here's what the Action button can be programmed to do:
  • Accessibility: Access to various accessibility settings, such as VoiceOver, Zoom, AssistiveTouch, Live Speech, and more.
  • Shortcuts: Open your favorite app, or run a shortcut created in or downloaded from the Shortcuts app, such as sending a message, playing a playlist, or controlling smart home devices.
  • Silent Mode: Like the Ring/Silent switch on existing iPhone models, toggle silent mode on or off, which will mute or unmute the ringer and alerts.
  • Camera: Take a photo, selfie, video, portrait, or portrait selfie with a single press of the Action button.
  • Flashlight: Turn on or off the flashlight on the back of the device.
Focus: Activate or deactivate a Focus mode.
  • Magnifier: Activate the Magnifier app to use the iPhone's camera as a magnifying glass to zoom in on small text or objects.
  • Translate: Launch the Translate app and start a conversation or text translation with a single press of the Action button.
  • Voice Memos: Start or stop recording a voice memo with the Voice Memos app.

New Action Button Functions Coming in iOS 18

iOS 18 allows the Action button to be assigned to one of the dozens of controls available in the new Control Center gallery, allowing the Action button to invoke Dark Mode, Airplane Mode, Personal Hotspot, and more.

Available Control Center actions in iOS 18 will include:
  • Calculator
  • Stopwatch
  • Alarm
  • Home
  • Timer
  • Dark Mode
  • Scan Code
  • Airplane Mode
  • Cellular Data
  • Personal Hotspot
  • Dark Mode
  • Quick Note
  • Remote
  • Wallet
  • Tap to Cash
  • Ping My Watch

These new options are in addition to the actions that were already available for the Action button on iOS 17, including Ring/Silent, Do Not Disturb, Camera, Flashlight, Voice Memo, Magnifier, Translate, Shortcut, and Accessibility. Some of the new Control Center options were already possible with the Shortcut or Accessibility options.

Multiple rumors have suggested that all the iPhone 16 models will also have an all-new button that's designed to make it easier to capture photos when the devices are held in landscape mode. Check out our dedicated article on the subject to learn more about what it will do. Apple is expected to announce the new iPhone 16 lineup next month.

And yet still the dynamic eye sore.
i bought an iPad mini just so I don’t have to look at the dynamic eyesore while I lay in bed.
I’ve been writing a Nintendo switch emulator for iOS in my spare time for the last six months. And it runs fantastic on my iPhone 14PM.

But the Dynamic Island ruins it for it.
Like watching a TV with a hammer thrown through one side of it.

The software runs fantastic on my iPad mini.
Bigger room to throw up my debug menu and no interference with on screen controls and no loss of media space.

Apple please realize the Dynamic Island is like FineWoven.
In theory it works.
But at what cost…..

would be nice if it automatically change its function with apps. ie make it the shutter button when you open up the camera.

The way IOS is handicapped it doesn’t really make it any better than a high end android device.

My wife has a top end Pixel she can hook up to her Studio display and use the little phone like a full fledged PC, with mouse support and a file system.
iOS does its best to emulate that feel.
But does its best also to make sure you cant quite accomplish the same tasks in the same manner as you would in your MacBook Pro. iOS REMINDS YOU that it’s not a desktop OS.

The more Apple continues to change, the less and less my wife and I work on the platform. Our revenue on the Apple App Store for desktop and mobile has shrank significantly.

Where on the PC/Android side it’s exploded.

I’ve been an Apple fanboy since 1998.
But with every new product that’s introduced I find myself slipping to the dark side.
And well guys, it’s not that bad over here.

I prefer the physical mute switch but that now that I think about it, my iPhone has been in silent mode for over a decade.
Same, I wish everyone would do that, particularly my fellow diners at restaurants.

Wouldn't the switch that is on the 15 models and previous phones be better for Silent Mode than a button? With the switch I never worry about it accidentally getting switched, but with a button isn't there a real chance of accidental presses?

I ask because I rely on the Silent Mode switch daily changing it as needed.

Cool story bro. I bet the android forums will welcome you with open arms.

It's gotten to the point where the engineering and capabilities has so outstripped what you will ever use (Computing wise.) on a phone that the only reason to upgrade is a much better camera.

After getting a 15 Pro I honestly see no reason to get a phone until... iPhone.... 20???

Glad they removed it.
You’re glad? How does the logic work that makes you glad that you have effectively no options play something on your phone for someone to hear on practically any speaker system they might have, any car with a stereo whose bluetooth will never pair with your specific version of bluetooth, any guitar amp, any boat stereo, anything? “Whew I sure am glad I & anyone else cant do any of that anymore just so apple could push airpods purchases, having all those options was such an unbearable burden.” ?

Theres no point to buying a phone with a lot of drivespace on it for music & media if you can‘t hear it. Ridiculous. I’m going back to an iphone 6s.

Seems like the best thing to do is have that button just open the control center.

I have never found myself in this situation and I suspect most haven't. I haven't thought about the headphone jack in years.

The action button is one feature I could have definitely lived without. I use it like a mute switch anyways so… 🤷

I believe the action button is one of the “biggest improvements” that sets the iPhone 16 apart from the 15. Maybe more nits for the screen and the much needed RAM. This is HUGE innovation! Apple spent a year of R&D into it and billions of dollars. Expect Tim to talk at least half an hour about it and see some breathtaking real world examples to fill the other time. Of course Apple has to charge a bit more for this great invention, together with the inflation.

Expect this keynote to be HUGE and Apple showing of their best iPhone yet. Timmy will be thrilled to get this in your hands as soon as possible. You’ll only see something like this coming from Apple 😜

The action button has been used as mute on my iPhone 15 Pro Max since they got rid of the mute switch.

More of the same for iPhone 16. Great. This inspires. So brave. /s
Same. I've tried Shortcuts but I found I missed just a quick Mute button. So after 11 months with my 15 Pro Max, the Action Button is really a Mute button.

They're adding dozens of functions, many of which seem kinda pointless because they bring up things that are only a press or two away already, but they keep overlooking/avoiding an obvious one: I want it to emulate the third button we used to have on wired earbuds - call it "Audio control":
  • single tap = play/pause
  • double tap = next track (or skip forward 30 seconds in podcasts/etc.)
  • triple tap = previous track (or skip backward 30 seconds in podcasts/etc.)
  • long press = the mute/ringer toggle, since there's already a different button for Siri.
I want to be able to have the phone in my hand and control playback with a tactile button without looking at the display.

I want Apple Ring with gesture controls to eliminate hitting the action button. I want Apple Ring to scroll throughout the iPhone, while having the iPhone on a tabletop. I want Apple Ring for quick toggles. I want Apple Ring to create sleep activity tracking and monitoring without the need of wearing Apple Watch to bed. I want Apple Ring to work as a Apple TV remote with Zoom, pinch, stretch, scrolling, and icon tap to open and close. I want Apple Ring for Apple Music and music apps for pause rewind, skip. Price Apple Ring at $199 with these features as this will rival Samsung Ring and capture huge market share. Come on Apple make it HAPPEN!
