Forgive me if this has already been posted, but I couldn't find it here. I somehow missed this, but the so-called new square sensor is not actually square. It's octagonal, basically a square with the corners cut off. I guess that would explain why full square open gate selfie video cannot be an option.

This image was posted a few times recently, but they left one thing out. As far as I can tell, it's not really an octagon either. It's a square with the corners cut off, but they're cut off in a somewhat curved fashion. It's like they designed the sensor to fit inside a circle that's too small for it. This is a way to maximize sensor coverage of a square inside the image circle of a circular lens field of view.
