Depends on what screen protector it is. The cheap ones you get for 99 cents obviously won't, most don't even cover the screen completely. I've used power support screen protectors as long as I had my 4 and never broke my screen yet I have dropped it on numerous occasions, all on hard surfaces. Never seen a member on macrumors with a decent screen protector shatter their phones.

I have a feeling that the cheap ones and the expensive ones are the same. Some company in China makes them all and some companies sell them for $1 and others sell for $10.

Suckers buy the $10 ones.

I dropped my naked 4 off the observation deck of the Empire state building. It bounced about 4 city blocks. Not one scratch, dent or crack in the glass. The next day I dropped it 2 feet on a carpet floor and the glass completely shattered.

Welp, that about sums this thread up. Case closed.

Dropped it a foot and a half and got a 2mm crack on the back glass (no case). Doesn't bother me though - till the time it works I'm happy.

Well, I finally did something bad to my phone yesterday. It got slammed in the trunk of my car, pinched at the top between lid and car.

Pulled it out, two scratched areas on the front glass. Not happy. Bumper cut in a couple places.

Until I had time last night to look at it closer. Turns out it was just some stuff on the screen. Still no scratches on this thing.

But now I'm worried about my car. :( I'll check it out this afternoon. This phone better not have damaged my car!

Oh, the bumpers are NOT the same quality. I have had 4 of them. Apples cost 10x as much, but are seriously better made. Better fit, better rubber, better plastic. I am using a cheap one because I can tolerate the cheapness to get the color I want.

Perhaps the screen protectors sort of hold the glass pieces together, if you get what I mean.

Plus, I guess the screen protectors also offer some minor, extreme minor protection against shock since the impact would be directly on the screen protector ON the display.
