I'm just confused. Does your provider actually charge more monthly to use the iPhone 5? I'm finding this extremely hard to believe. It sounds like the iPhone 5 is $500 and then you typical monthly bill. In that case yes. Have a 4S, then sell it and pay the $200-$300 difference. Not have a smartphone at all? Then yes, it would be to me. What I get out of an iPhone is easily worth $500 over a year.

As the title say. While it's an upgrade from the 4s, the 16gb iPhone 5 costs 1400$ total with a one-year contract in my country (Norway) and that's the cheapest alternative from my provider.

The first payment (to get the phone) is $500. And an additional $900 over the course of 11 months.

This is bizarre logic. If you buy a different phone, you aren't going to have a year of free service, so you must factor that in when doing a comparison. Are you claiming that your cell providers charge $900 more per year than if you were using, say, a Nokia phone?

It may have come of as somewhat confusing, I can see that. To give an example focusing solely on the initial cost; the Galaxy s3 costs about $100, while the iPhone 5 costs $500 on the same contract. In addition, guaranty for the iPhone is also almost twice as expensive as on another phone, and this is something I need in case I break the screen or similar.

So basically a $400 in difference from any other phone on (the norwegian) market at the moment. Including the guaranty it's a $500 difference.

And including changing the contract I have now in order to get an iPhone at this price, it will be an extra $400 in the course of a year.

Totals at $900 a year. And another $300 for breaking the contract I'm actually on (doesn't end before next year).

It's not about iPhone really. It's about ridicilous norwegian iPhone prices. I suggest you buy factory unlocked iPhone 5 for 800-1000$ and get sim card with cheap pre-paid plan.

Worth is always subjective. If it is "worth" it to YOU go for it. Every one gets to spend their money as THEY see fit. Would I drop $1400 for it? No. But if you have the money and want it, go for it.

If the unlock Verizon LTE verizon is compatible & will work on your carrier, take a vacation here in time for the unlock version and when supplies are abundant at stores. Purchase it outright, no contract. Yeah, admit it, you guys are rich (or your parents at least, haha) and have plenty of vacation. Yep, iP5, is worth all those hassles and money. :D
