In prior generations, the 6, 6s and 7 were the more popular models. This time around, the 8+ seems significantly more popular than the 8. Why did this happen this time around?

Why does it seem that way? And is it actually the case?

What Exactly leads you to believe this? Or more or less, is this based on your readings on a tech forum or people around you that you believe the 8 Plus seems more popular? But if I had to add in my own opinion, the iPhone 8 Plus has the dual camera and larger battery are selling points.

According to an article on business insider, it is true. Plus accounts for 3.59% of new iPhone adoption while 8 accounts for 2.78%.

Let me see if I can link it.
Is that a really a significant difference? Is that that much different than with some previous releases? Could the release of the X be a factor in it all this year?

Its simple, people watch a lot of media on phones now. The bigger 5.5" screen is better than the now small 4.7inch.
Also, people are getting used to big phones.

From what I could find on a quick Google search iPhone 7 plus out sold iPhone 7 during 2016 holiday season and then regular 7 picked up during 2017 regular seasons.

Does anyone know a site with comprehensive iPhone historical sales figures?

I think the reason might be that the X steals more 8 buyers than 8+ buyers

That's a good point.

With the X around, there is very little reason to pick the 8 unless the cost is your primary concern (in which case I'd recommend a 7 over the 8, and I imagine a lot of people have made that same choice). The size is very similar in hand, but the screen is a good bit larger.

The 8+ still has a screen size advantage (width) on the X, so it's still a strong competitor.

I would agree that larger Smart phones have a grown in popularity for reasons such as the battery, readability on a larger display, dual camera, ect. Part of that, is because Apple wants to put there more exclusive features into the more expensive, larger iPhone.

In terms of marketing, Apple has emphasized the iPhone Plus models over the years, especially with the iPhone 7 Plus when the dual camera was introduced.

I can't speak to everyone-but I can share my experience:

-I have an 8+ because I came from the Android world where all my phones were 5.5+ for years. When I was forced to switch to iOS for some work apps, I originally had an old 6S and was super excited to get back to what felt like a "normal" size screen of the 8+. I think a lot of Android switchers would feel the same way.
-People are becoming more aware of the better camera in the + series. Portrait mode is a big deal to a lot of people, as is the quality of the camera in general. I know my mom had a 6S and fell in love with the + series when she saw the camera quality that my brother's girlfriend had in her 7+.

It's only $200 cheaper than the X with nearly the same cameras, same amount of RAM, Telephoto, and X cannibalized the 8 sales. Has more ppi and more common resolution of 1080p than the X. Aspect ratio isn't messed up.

Who wants to pay another $700 for an HD iPhone with only 2 GB RAM, same ppi as iPhone 4 at 326, worst battery life of the trio, and no Telephoto? The 8 is pointless with the X around.

Cheaper than the X but with 95% of the same tech?

Arguably a better screen for most users? No notch? Did I mention it's cheaper than the X?

The only compelling thing about the 8 is the price, which isn’t cheap enough to be that compelling.

Less RAM, poor battery life, significantly smaller screen but barely smaller than the X.

I think 95% is highballing the similarity in tech-and how is the screen arguably better for most users?

I was replying to the OP who was talking about the 8 plus. The 8 is basically the new iphone c.

I love my regular 8. Sure it's familiar but it was a pretty big upgrade for me over my old 6.

Reasons I went for the 8 over the X or 8+ (both of which I bought and returned):

The X hurt my eyes very bad and the aspect ratio I did not care for at all. The eye strain alone was a huge deal breaker for me, not something I would ever want to get used to. Debilitating, in fact.

The 8+ I could not get a non-yellow screen and I have an iPad and laptop for media consumption so I prefer the smaller, much easier to handle size of the 8. If I got a good screen I probably would have kept it and got used to the size, but my old 6 screen was much better than the 2 units I tried.

I don't notice a difference in screen resolution on devices these small either. They all look fine to me. The battery life on the 8 is just fine for my uses and I'm not a big picture taker so I don't care about the camera differences.

Initially I got the 256 X and after all the hassle ended up with a 64gb 8. Saving $500 is pretty cool too ;)

I think last year with the 7 and 7 Plus was the turning point where the Plus model overtook the regular size in popularity/sales.
It’s likely for a few reasons. For one, people have simply gotten used to seeing and using larger phones. Also, since last year the Plus model has had notable spec improvements in the camera and RAM compared to the smaller model. This year, the 8 Plus is pretty much the X for people who want to keep the home button.

I'm one of the defectors of the regular iPhones to the X. Pretty sure X is taking a lot of the regular iPhones' share because one of the major draws was the smaller form. The plus is growing in popularity with older crowd. The younger demographic is still there due to the better spec of the plus as well as the media watching. Less regular buyers due to X, and older crowd seem to all be moving to the plus. Anecdotal, but makes sense. I'd be curious what would happen with the Xplus, but pretty sure there will always be a market for the smaller form factor as well.

Regarding screen color issues, it’s very easy to correct that. You have adjustments in the settings

I tried everything. Adjusting the color tint does not solve the problem, it was impossible to get it to look less yellow without it looking too blue. The brightness was also too low, and I compared to floor models and other phones as well. They were just bad panels.

Hey would you be kind enough to check the iphone 8 plus model you returned. Which model no. was it for e.g. A 1897, 1863 etc. Want to see if there is a faulty batch on a particular series.

Ah you had a defective one.
Mine is perfect display wise. No problems.
