Nope

Being dyslexic having spell check on the iphone would be great.

I am dyslexic and I have to say a definite no to that one. Your head simply plays tricks on you and simple words are often more difficult then longer more difficult words. honestly the thing that has helped me personally is posting on forums like this. Also for me Google is the best spell checker I have found, only problem I have to eliminate other dyslexics when I search a already misspelled word. Firefox has a pretty good spell checker. I double check my post before I post them but more often then not see mistakes after I post and again have to re-edit them again. as long as I am getting all this out I know grammar I suck ;) for me at least the school was more concerned with my reading then teaching me proper grammar, even though I had a above average reading level. Sorry to get this all out on your post just wanted to point out we are not all perfect and yes I know I'm not.

It's FAR more annoying than that! The iPhone has half a spell checker.

In other words, it changes the correct UK spelling of words like "authorise" into the annoyingly incorrect american spelling "authorize".

Even though the phone knows that it's in the UK.

Yes I hate that!

It also automatically makes some words such as "white" and "market" begin with caps automatically... Try it.

Has anyone noticed that the iPhone really does not have a spell checker? It has an intelligent keyboard that can correct your mistakes, if you are clumsy and hit the wrong key - but if you actually don't know how to spell a word, or even just skip a letter because you're typing too fast, it won't suggest a correction.

This is probably the most annoying thing about the iPhone to me right now.

As an example - try to type "aardvark". If you type "Aardvarl", it will suggest "aardvark" as the correction. Then try "ardvark" - you get nothing.

Hello guys and gals...I have the answer to your spell check needs....

Firstly, you must be jailbroken. There is an app in Cydia called "inspell"

It works perfectly! Just like the way the spell check on your computer does it. Once you make a spelling error it underlines the word with a red line. After you're done writing your email/text/note/calender (it works system wide) you simply double tap the word in question and select "correct" and that's it, it's done.

hope that helps guys and gals!

Have a great day everyone!! :D

Learning to spell might be an option for those people too .

Lol.

This has been bugging me, too. On several occasions, I have typed the word "actually" and hit the 2 L's too fast so that what actually (heh) results is the word "actualy". The iPhone has never once corrected this. It does seem eager to correct proper names, though--I was sending text updates to my parents on the status of the Cardinals game on Sunday (they were on vacation and not near TV/computers) and when I tried to send a text saying that Colby Rasmus had hit a 2-run walk-off HR, it sent "Rasmussen walk-off HR!!!" My dad was like, "Um, who?"

"Internet" and "ethernet" get capitalized also. Sure, perhaps they should be to be completely proper about things, but I feel like it makes me look like a Miss Prissy Pants to send texts with words like that capitalized. :)

Well at least that's technically correct, but the words "market" and "white" arn't meant to start with caps!

Another annoying thing: there are some words you just cannot type! Go open Notes now and try typing "aspie", you will find it's impossible to type the "e", it always enters "r", no matter how careful you are. It does this on other words too but I forgot exactly which ones.

The Speller app is pretty good. I love it. I use it often. You type in how yo;u think it spelled and it will correct it give you wither suggestions or a green check mark. You can even see the definition of the words if you want right in the app. 5 stars!

hi im rob... new to the forum but what pisses me off about this auto-correct is that "rob" is not correct apparently. according the its dictionary my name is spelled wrong. and its not like rob is that rare of a name. it always changes it to "Ron" is ron that much more popular of a name???

is there a way to edit the "dictionary" in the phone to add or subtract correct words?

I'm not sure what's up with your iPhone. I'm entering this on mine, and I have no problem writing white, market or aspie. I do get capitalization on Ethernet and Internet, though.

Yes, there is. The dictionary learns as you type. So, when you type Rob, and it offers Ron, simply make sure that you hit the little x to tell it that you don't mean 'Ron'. After doing this a few times, it should stop trying to correct your name.

(Interestingly, mine doesn't try to correct Rob. Go figure...)

What I still wish they would improve is the ability of the intelligent typing correction to address errors that result in spaces (i.e., one's tap getting recognized as a space instead of a letter on the bottom keyboard row) or missed characters within a word (where one tries to press them but they are not recognized at all, so that the word has too few characters). These are almost always the types of typing errors I make on the iPhone, and neither of them get addressed by the system.

Tell me, does the auto correction still work, too? One critique I've heard of the SpellChecker app from iTunes is that the auto correction is off in their text editor, making typing quickly much harder to do.

In all honesty, this might constitute the first significant temptation for me to jailbreak...

yes the autocorrection still works, plus you can add your own autocorrections, which is great for addresses etc, for example I have added "ee" to automatically autocorrect to my email address, save me having to keep typing it.

People don't use spell checkers on their computers (it appears from too many online forums including this one). You think they'd use one for a smart phone?

I agree- those screen caps look awesome. I wish I didn't have the new boot-rom that requires the tethered JB after a restart- otherwise I'd be all over this app (and backgrounder + 3G-unrestrictor + SBSettings)

Spell checker would be nice.....

there have been a few times where I've had a brain malfunction and have not been able to spell words

such as: coincidence, rendezvous, Indianapolis, and just recently: convenience.

happens to the best of us I suppose......

Shirley their's an ape four dat...

I too am dyslexic (diagnosed back in the days when they equated that with a general lack of intelligence ). In any case I often use voice dictation on my Mac rather than struggle with typing (although it seems bizarre to be speaking to myself in an empty room, there are privacy issues becuase evrybody can hear what I dictate outside my office, and verbalizing punctuation is a pain in the a$$). So I was just wondering ... how good are the voice recognition apps on the iPhone?

Try going into settings-general-international-keyboards, and then turn on English (UK). Should fix your problems.

How do I get it to use a UK dictionary instead of the US one?

Edit: Never mind, I've done it.

Well I tried it, and for some reason, when typing into a text box on a website, the keyboard becomes really slow. Using it to type an MMS etc though it's fine.

iPhone spellcheck compared to Mail spellcheck

I picked up my first iPhone last spring (3G followed quickly by 3G). I actually hadn't used Mac's Mail program till a bit after that, but do now. In Mail, you have two separate options for spellcheck... [a] 'while typing' and what they call 'before sending,' but if it's like the iPhone, I'd call it 'while sending.' I have 'while typing' turned on (and yes, I can spell, but am not infallible, nor is my keyboard at times)... but I do NOT have 'before sending' turned on. So back to the iPhone. It has one option, on or off. And I find that no matter how carefully I deal with all the oddities spelled out in other posts, above (and there's no shortage of them... thinking 'car' should be 'cat' is a great example).... when I open my own copy of what was sent, it's been changed AFTER the fact, i.e. when I hit 'send.' Not only do I look like an illiterate moron, but when I include such things as airport codes or times or places, there is real confusion afoot. Why in the world can they not have a two-stage option for the iPhone's email, akin to the one for Mac's Mail program? I'd keep 'while typing' on, but turn the renegade 'while sending' option off in a heartbeat.
