I love having my iPhone 3g naked - the form factor is gorgeous in the hand. My primary reason for my iPhone 3G now being in a case, was not initially to protect it(although it's great for that), but to make it a lot easier to hold, without fear of dropping it, as I feel the smooth plastic back makes it too slippery, especially after prolonged holding. All I used to use was a disposable film screen protector.
The case I use now, is the Contour Fusion Black. It gives me good grip, has a great blend of silicone and hard plastic in all the right places, to ensure rigidity and does a great job of keeping the bulkiness to a minimum.
