Because Verizon is becoming more and more envious by the day and maybe, more stupid.

Well what can you expect them to do after they already stated all the so-called flaws about the iPhone. There is really nothing else to pick at and it's obvious they are getting desperate with a commercial like this.

Too funny. The whole point of good advertising is to create buzz for the product. I think that it is working...this thread is proof of that.

Well, Verizon certainly likes to rub their message in as much as they can.

The Droid is definitely appealing to geeks... probably the same geeks who spend a lot of time in front of the XBOX 360, when they're not playing Left4Dead2 in from of their Alienware PC.

This has worked well considering initial sales, but Xbox-playing geek fanboys also tend to have ADHD when it comes to what's awesome. So Verizon will have to switch strategies if they want to keep sales going past Christmas. The question is whether the rest of the public will forget that they were pretty much alienated the first marketing-go-round.

The Droid ad is so 'over the top manipulative' that you've got to be really dumb to buy this phone because of this ad.

It's like " OMG! I'm not girly! I'll buy the Droid and be manly. "

These kind of ad's are insulting to every one watching them, they assume you're THAT stupid to fall for it.

Really, really poor marketing. A wast of money Verizon. All your customers will be redneck's and 16 year old boy's.

Sorry if this has been posted already:

Total agreement.

I think they assume that the viewer is smart and adult enough to see the over-the-top humor.

I agree that those are the types who will take such an ad seriously, but all the people I know who've bought a Droid so far, are women.

Hopefully the reader is smart and sees the over-the-top humor of my post.

Think Different is just a joke when referring to the iPhone. With the draconian moderation of the App Store you are only allowed to "think" as Apple allows on their phone. Want to "think different"? Get a phone with an OS that lets you do what you want, not what apple wants.

How come Apple has the only successful app store?

Perhaps end users are willing to pay for convenience and no malware.

How come before Apple iPhone the phones on the market don't let you do what you want, by requiring a thick cryptic manual that most people just don't carry around with their phone?

The iPhone was revolutionary, perhaps what the "think different" message was intend to speak about. To my knowledge, the campaign hasn't been used recently or for the iPhone.

Verizon management is not very bright with this one. I thought their map commercials were good, but this is a mistake.

Also I feel sorry for them having to market the ridiculous name "droid".
Next we can see commercials about how the iPhone is "gay."

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7D11 Safari/528.16)

apple won't respond. They'll just keep doing their thing and outselling droids 10 to 1 or whatever it is. Responding only sends th message that they think the droid is a threat.
They already responded to prior ads. I doubt they would respond to this one per say. However, "at least we aren't chauvinistic males..." would be an interesting ad.

I'm a man, so I need a girly phone. Droid? No, I'm not gay.
Perhaps that was the message Verizon was going for...

Too funny. The whole point of good advertising is to create buzz for the product. I think that it is working...this thread is proof of that.
No, not when you become offensive.

The Droid will sell amongst Verizon users, only because the rest of their phones are crap. The real question is how many will switch because of the Droid.

Really, really poor marketing. A wast of money Verizon. All your customers will be redneck's and 16 year old boy's.
Hahaha...

Exactly.

I was just reading the article and watching the YouTube vid of the ad and I heard the commercial come on the TV downstairs...that's creepy lol.

i'll take an elegant "princess" phone over a duct-taped scud missile rocket phone or whatever they call it.

i am sure there are geo metro's out there with turbo chargers that are faster than a porsche but you would still want a porsche...a cell phone became more than just a "machine" a long time ago as did a car become more than just an "engine"

form is a big factor in products as opposed to purely function...we have many lessons of this

Apple should/could have fun with this messaging and remind people to Think Different. As in - DON'T be a robot.

This would be a horrible idea. What are they going to say? Be different - all of our phones have a black background! How is one iPhone different from the next? They all look exactly the same besides user content (apps, contacts, and your text messages). When I had an iPhone, I would often grab one of my friends by mistake. There is no way to distinguish iPhones besides app placement, or by a case etc. They offer little in the way of customization. That being said, I think the ads are moronic and am not sure why they keep referring to the phones as robots.

Although your comments are valid - there's a difference between thinking different and being different. It's semantics on how you interpret Think Different. Is the emphasis on THINK or DIFFERENT. If it's on DIFFERENT - then your case (personalization) is very valid. If it's on THINK - then we agree that the term robot here is a silly.

At the end of the day - none of this matters. I don't think this commercial "sells" the droid to anyone other than someone under 14 who wants to look cool.

I agree. Some are overreacting to this ad. Companies design and create ads for certain target groups. They may design an ad for use on TV late at night, or a channel primarily watch by men. I doubt they plan to run this during The View or Oprah. It looks like an ad for use on Spike TV.

It is because they have nothing to compete with the iPhone and they are jealous...The only phone they have to compete with is based on a Variant of Unix OS, same thing Apple iPhone OS is, the BB is losing steam because people are getting pissed at Verizon for limiting BB abilities, also my wife has a BB Curve on VZ, this thing reboots in the middle of a call, it is just horrible, but I have NO trouble and Great reception and 3G with AT&T on my 3GS

It looks like a straight fact that Verizon is putting up a "no girls allowed" sign on the droid.
You point out that it's really just an analogy (and you're right about that). But when you make an analogy showing that "female" = "our competition" you're pretty much ASKING women to take their money elsewhere.
I thought the advertisement was very much geared towards guys. If you're a woman, and she makes the purchasing decisions for the household, you're not going to consider the droid. Unless the hubster or kid whines about how they really want the droid, the woman is going to pick something else. Hell, she'll probably consider the iPhone.

I do love American adds. Like your medicine adds that go on about how wonderful they can make your day then finish off by listing every possible side effect :)
The inclusion of the side effects is mandated by the FDA, IIRC. I personally like the meds for depression that add they might make you commit suicide. That sounds like a real winner there.

how can iPhone users be empty headed if the iPhone is intuitive and designed to be simple to use but advanced it the back end? if anything i think iPhone users, and Mac users for that matter, are social, outgoing but quite intellectual as well.

i dont mind if the iPhone is portrayed as girly. now obviously its not only girly as men use it as well, but if girls are impressed by my iPhone then im all for it :eek:

...and either way, it's grammatically incorrect, so who cares? ;)

Meh, I thought the ad was silly. I'm not bothered by it. I'm perfectly happy with my princess phone.
