- The "compact" : SE - 4"

- The "classic" : LCD screen - 7S, 8, 8S...

- The "iPhone 8" : 10th Anniversary / new premium tier...

- The "next" model : OLED screen - '18-'19...

... sounds about right...?!

P.S: Apple, I'd buy a slim iPod Touch 4.7/5.5

Not quite. The OLED iPhone is expected to debut this fall, not 2018 or 2019. Now, in 2018/2019, it's been rumored that all models of iPhones are to be OLED (With no indication of the SE being OLED) .

And I don't see Apple ever manufacturing an iPod that would be 4.7/5.5 inch. I don't think there's enough of a demographic that would purchase an iPod touch at those sizes, when the iPhone is the exact same size as those models you listed and does everything the iPod can.

It will be interesting to see what Apple would do to the SE next year (lets face it, there is no new SE this year since Apple already refreshed it with the higher storage tier). If Apple put an A10 on whatever new SE next year, it will be a beast compact phone. I would be tempted to go back to that form factor if Apple upgrade the camera (both front and back) to match the regular iPhone (8 or 8S or whatever).

I've been thinking the same thing. I still use an iPhone 6, and it's served me well, but I'm holding off until spring of 2018 to upgrade just to see if there is a next generation SE. If not, then I'll weigh my options at the time. My wife uses an SE and aside from it being a great looking phone, it's fast, has solid battery life, and a better camera than my 6.

You know they should just keep the SE and rebrand it the iPhone Classic. Keep the aesthetic the same, upgrade the CPU/Camera/RAM every few years. Keep the features as they are - e.g. Headphone jack, Apple Pay, no gimmicks like 3D Touch and waterproofing. For people who want a great looking and fast performing iPhone that's comfortable to use, has great battery life, is sturdy, and fits in your pocket. I'd buy a new one every 3 years or something.

To each their on what I would consider is a 'Gimmick' with 3D Touch. It has functionality and it serves its purpose for short/cutting. Where as the water resistance could be improved, as the iPhone SE currently does not have a water resistance rating.

That said, it's likely Apple's plan with the iPhone SE as it is currently to update every 18 months or so. It's not meant to be a phone that will be updated annually. It was simply brought back in terms of offering a demographic a 4 inch phone who still prefers One and India is likely another Factor offering something affordable in their country. At least Apple is offering a choice of a 4 inch iPhone, where most smart phone manufacturers are not offering phone sizes for this price point and size.

I think the "premium" tier this year will move down next year. So in 2018, we'll have:

iPhone 8 (size of the 7, with a bezel-less 7 Plus sized-screen) and iPhone 8 Plus (even larger screen)

...and, maybe and iPhone 8 mini. The size of the iPhone SE, but with a bezel-less screen. Or the same design as the current SE, but with iPhone 7 internals?
