The plastic case isn't going to crack unless you drop it. In the few years I've been around I have yet to see a laptop case break unless it was dropped. MBs are going to break unless the user does something to it.

Im not sure where you have "been around" but I never dropped my white crackbook and the inventible palmrest crack came along with small tiny little hairline cracks which developed all around the vents. I was always very careful with my computer as I was with my launch day white iPhone 3g which also developed a crack.

Go search, palmrest crack in Google and you will find PLENTY of people with the same cracks, as well as in the iPhone 3G discussion about their cracks.

But I guess...they all "dropped" theirs.

The plastic is not of good quality or at least there was a HUGE bad batch.

Known issue

Actually this appears to be a known issue recognised by Apple and I had two MacBooks recently repaired, both were out of warrantee and I do not have Apple Care.

And no, I did not drop 2 MacBooks.

Call Apple, get a support incident number, take that to any Apple authorized support shop. The quality turned out quite bad, but Apple is really good in fixing it. On one MacBook (2 years old) they replaced:
- screen (flickers, known issue)
- bottom of case (cracks, known issue)
- keyboard, trackpad and support (cracks, known issue)

As all my problems are now resolved and I have and new looking MacBook I don't hesitate to recommend Apple again. Here is to hoping the new alu MacBook are of better quality - although I must say the white ones are prettier and more original.

Brought my 1.5 year old out of warranty Macbook to Apple this week. I showed them the case cracks and mentioned how I read about so many people have the same problem. At first one of the guys said "oh you got water damage". But the genius went to the back with my laptop and brought it out and said Apple would replace my bottom case for free. I was very excited!

So I have an appointment Monday to drop it off. He said they have to send it out to get it replaced and will take about a week. So never having to have a computer repaired in my life, anything I should know before I drop my laptop off with Apple? I was just planning on doing a Time Machine backup and that's it.

Also I will mention to them how my iSight just stopped working and maybe get an estimate on how much that'll cost to fix, if it's worth it or not.

Hi,

My sister had her palm rest replaced out of warranty but Apple refused to replace the plastic around the screen where it is just falling apart. She complains about it, but I remind her about the G4 iBook logic board problems and she tends to prefer having a blemished computer over a dead one.

Apple dropped the ball on this design. Hopefully the aluminum work out better.

I honestly wouldn't recommend it. My aluminum PowerBook just got its screen replaced for free, but they also replaced the Bluetooth module without me even mentioning it.

Here's an update to my problem.

I dropped my laptop off and it was ready 24 hours later (they said 3-5 days). When I picked it up the associate really didn't say anything other than that I needed to sign some paperwork and that was about it.

The bottom case was totally replaced. There is still a little pucker where the screw or magnet would be in the corner of the case. I guess that's just how it is and they couldn't get it together better than that. But I won't complain, just hope the cracks don't come back again.

And even bigger bonus my iSight works again. Customer service was excellent as well. I continue to be a very happy Apple customer!
