I'm talking about actual measurements, not forecasts. DDR4 is supposedly faster than DDR3 too according to such roadmaps, but in practice people generally aren't seeing a significant improvement.

My comment was based on Intel's predication hence saying "should be".

Either way it should be a better chip overall.. certainly worth the 6 month wait imo.

It may be worth waiting for in regard to the h.265 thing you're concerned about. The performance in other respects, not so much.

I have had very similar opinions to the OP:

  • Thumbs up: display, keyboard, USB-C ports, finger print ID, build quality, portability.
  • Thumbs down: touch bar (gimmick), battery life (cant get more than 4 or 5 hours), performance (specially graphics), price (given performance).
It is a great laptop, but it has some significant flaws that I just cant ignore, and therefore it is not my favorite laptop purchase ever. I think my old MBA 13" was a better purchase in 2013 than my MBP 15" has been in 2017.

What's burning up your battery power so fast? You should get twice that for light use.

Surprised you're having poor performance for your graphic work too, but I suppose a lot of that depends on the software. Some is really better on Windows.

The software issues with graphics were addressed early on, and there haven't been many reports of issues lately.
I was running 10.12.3 (which was supposed to fix the issues), did an SMC reset at the suggestion of Apple tech support, and still had the same problem. Again, I realize my issue wasn't super common, but there are now years of user reports indicating that dGPUs end up being a problematic (if infrequent) weak link in these machines.

13" is fine, abit overpriced though...

15" - i will buy it from apple on the same day they can add dgpu without issues. I rather use windows machines for multicores/dgpu...

Apple seems to have a long (and poor) track record with dGPUs, though admittedly a lot of the problems seemed to have been resolved beyond the 2011/2012 models

the mid 2015 dGPU fired up the fans just by connecting an external display and playing a youtube video. it was absolutely awful. while it didn't make any noise on it's own, it was disturbing trying to work in the fan noise. the 2016 with the radeon pro dgpu was at least quiet under normal load and in PS, but it blacked out when disconnecting it in clamshell mode while connected to an external display. the touch bar would lock up, the only thing lit was the keyboard and the sound still rolled, but everything else was black and didn't respond. it is a reproducible error and is present in both the 13" and the 15", and even happens with the new LGs that were made for the new macs.

I have owned 4 models of this computer. One 13", and three 15". One of the 15" had a bent chassis, you could wobble it on a flat surface. Another displayed white tint across the screen and adjusted volume and brightness on it's own. All three had issues with external displays. Getting peripherals that supported USB-C was hard, even though the standard has been on macs for over two years now. Many people are trying to make hubs, but few of them arrive to market. Kickstarters and the like all fail to meet demands.

I spent three months just trying to get things to work. I ordered cables and docks, but they all seemed to have quirks. I had to make compromises from the beginning. Finally my wife told me to just get rid of the computer and get a refund. I felt like I paid 3000 dollars and upwards just to betatest this device.

The Touch Bar was fun for a week or two, but it never grew on me. It's great for the last two pro apps in Apples portofolio, Final Cut Pro and Logic, but even with support in alot of the programs I use, they never really made sense, since I had to stop my workflow to apply "touches".

Now typing on my stable MacBook 12 from 2015 instead of any of the new Pros. Now I am wondering if I should buy the mid 2015 with Iris Pro just to have a computer at hand with four cores and native support for macOS. The Mac Pro is labeled a misstep both from "Pros" and Apple itself, so buying it would be a total loss as fast as the modular Mac arrives.

It's useful to keep these things in perspective by comparing to other brands, which also have issues with dGPUs. People who focus only on Mac issues will get a very skewed view of how reliable Macs are.

I really like mine. The touchbar is kind of weird, but it doesn't get in the way of things. I do like the fingerprint scanner.

Performance wise, it does what I need it to do and the form factor is very good.

I'm not sure you know, the way this Mac feels underpowered (as highlighted in the first post) any extra grunt would be a blessing and worth waiting a few months for Imo :D

Though on the 15 its the intel gpu that stinks (less powerful than 13 inch intel)

I have switched off intel card all the time when on powercord so it only runs on dgpu AMD and then the computer finally becomes good and fast...

Maybe it's VLC, or just bad luck, or MacOS, but my 27" 5k iMac won't play any of the .265 videos that are from that source site. . . So MacBook Pro be damned, if my iMac won't play it (4.0ghz i7/32gb/4gb Radeon). . . That said, both machines seem to play 4k .264 content fine. Not a video guy though, so I don't know what the difference is.

People have reported that they can play 4K .265 files on their 2016 MBPs... when running windows! So it's down to Apple not providing support I guess. Something tells me they won't bother - because Kaby Lake and all the new chips will have hardware support for it..

the nvidia pascal drivers are out...so the new MBP can be more powerful from now on

just picked up a refurb.. will play with it for a few weeks and see what happens. maybe a return + wait for the next iteration is on the horizon...
