The macbook was an awesome upgrade but the mbp was not even needed really.
All the MBP needed was a new trackpad, the graphics card, keyboard, case and thats it.

Yes, and they DIDN'T upgrade the GPU. Other than the new chipset in there, it's almost exactly the same hardware as before.
 
No, they weren't. This is the first model that is. Being able to physically do it yourself, at least theoretically does not make it a user-replaceable part.

Remove some screws, unplug some cables. It wasn't a hard thing to do, and certainly wasn't a theoretical challenge. Just did my GF's new prev gen MBP and it took a whopping 10 min. Oooo yeah, such a challenge.

It's NOT user upgradeable, and it IS a challenge for most people.
