On this week's episode of The MacRumors Show, we discuss Apple's concentrated week of announcements that saw the introduction of 10 new products.

The most significant announcement of the week was the MacBook Neo, an all-new entry-level Apple laptop that starts at $599. The MacBook Neo is designed to compete with lower-cost Windows laptops and Chromebooks, while expanding the Mac lineup with a substantially more affordable option.

Unlike every other Apple silicon Mac, the MacBook Neo is powered by the A18 Pro chip originally developed for the iPhone 16 Pro, making it the first Mac to use an iPhone-class processor instead of an M-series chip.

The machine features a rounded, colorful design available in Silver, Indigo, Blush, and Citrus finishes, with matching keyboards and wallpapers that give it a more playful appearance than Apple's existing notebooks. At 2.7 pounds, it weighs the same as a MacBook Air.

It offers a 13-inch Liquid Retina display with uniform, iPad-style bezels rather than a notch, a Magic Keyboard, a mechanical trackpad, two USB-C ports, 8GB of memory, a headphone jack, a 1080p camera, dual mics, dual speakers with Spatial Audio, and a battery life rated for up to 16 hours.

Apple also updated several existing devices with modest specification improvements. The iPhone 17e retains the same design and price as the iPhone 16e but adds the A19 chip, MagSafe support, Apple's second-generation C1X modem, and 256GB of base storage.

The 11- and 13-inch iPad Air gained the M4 chip, 12GB of RAM, Wi-Fi 7 support via Apple's N1 wireless chip, and the same C1X modem in cellular models. Meanwhile, the 13- and 15-inch MacBook Air were upgraded with the M5 chip and a higher base storage capacity of 512GB, though the removal of the 256GB option increased the starting price to $1,099.

At the high end of the Mac lineup, Apple refreshed the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with the new M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, introducing a "Fusion Architecture" that bonds two 3nm dies together into a single processor. These models also gained faster SSD speeds, higher base storage, and Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 via the N1 chip. Battery life increased slightly across the lineup, while GPU cores now include dedicated Neural Accelerators intended to improve AI workloads.

Apple also expanded its display lineup with a new Studio Display XDR model, replacing the Pro Display XDR. The new model offers a 27-inch 5K mini-LED panel with up to a 120Hz refresh rate, HDR brightness up to 2,000 nits, and Thunderbolt 5 connectivity. The standard Studio Display was updated at the same time with two Thunderbolt 5 ports, improved speakers, and a camera that now supports Desk View, but retains its 60Hz panel and 600-nit brightness.

All of the newly announced devices became available to pre-order on Wednesday, March 4, with the entire lineup scheduled to launch and begin arriving to customers on Wednesday, March 11. I think this is a great move. Not only many more people will be finally be able to enjoy using a Mac, but Apple will see it's services' subscription increase a lot!
This, in my opinion, is the ultimate goal with this product.

LOL these guys are so underwhelmed and disappointed sounding. I had to skip around because good lord I couldn't stand over an hour of this.

EDIT: Yeah, this actively hurts my brain to listen to. Would not recommend.

What are you talking about?
They are great. They talk about their perspective without script/reading, and they do it very genuinely.
I like them a lot!

I think it’s a mistake to suggest the iPhone 17e is just for 1st time iPhone users or people on a strict budget. Many like my parents and their friends have asked me about it, and if like my mother, she spends 85% of her screen time on her iPad Air. As for all the fuss about MagSafe it’s over blown. Sure, it’s nice to have but very much inflated in the tech community, whereby we project that need.

Not often I outright disagree with Hartley (and agree with Dan) but on the Pro XDR he’s discussing a pro machine and annoyed it misses consumer features? The Pro XDR is so much nicer than the Studio XDR and part of that is the absence of the camera.

32” 6K is my minimum requirement for my next monitors not least because I prefer a single 32” to dual 27”. I want to be clear: I have no issue with Apple releasing a Studio XDR. My issue is that they s*canned the Pro XDR. No particular reason to feel optimistic but I’ll keep my fingers crossed that they’re saving it for the M5 Mac Studio updates…

If not, I suppose I’ll have to get one of: Acer, ASUS, or LG. (Dell’s out, you hideous beast) I just really wanted an Apple option.

Also: I’m more likely to get an e to replace my 15 Pro than any other iPhone.

Really? They’re generally Apple diehards and nothing they said is off:

It’s nice 17e has Ceramic Shield double storage at no extra cost and MagSafe and 15w qi2 spec. Good for people on older iPhones

MB Air you got double storage but for. $100 more. A forced upgrade but at 50% off the regular storage spec bump. The dynamic power adapter as a free pack in sounds better than the 35w dual usb that was on previous. No charger internationally stinks though.

Pro a drop in spec replacement, they didn’t mention 1tb for $100 more base but also same principle. And even more of a hold given m6 oled rumored model for later this year. This is for people who need a new workhorse machine now and not in the fall or winter.

iPad Air a spec bump and c1x and 12gb ram at same price. No new colors.

The studio display makes no sense for someone who already has the previous and the 120hz model is exorbitant.

Listening now to MacBook neo portion but they sound bullish on that one for the price.

…I think their rundown is totally fair and not at all curmudgeon status.

Well the MacBook Neo does have the 5g chip modem in it but the OS does not have it yet enabled as it's just now about the software here. Maybe Apple will enable it in the future here.

The video is one hour long! WTH? LOL! I tried watching and I even tried speeding it up but I had to skip every minute and gave up. There are better videos when it comes to Mac news.

Apple does not take any chances like it used too and why should they? They already have 2 advantages being the anti-AI tech brand and they don't cost as much money vs the PC makers as RAM isn't getting any cheaper here anytime soon as they pop one AI bubble the AI makes several more AI bubbles in it's place instantly as AI is all software based not tied to high end GPUs anymore like Crypto mining still needs being a multi-headed hydra now since DeepSeek does not need those Nvidia gpus to do AI!
