He’s been blasting Stage Manager on iOS and System Settings in Ventura for months now on DF, on The Talk Show, and on Dithering. His vociferous blogging and podcasting about Safari’s new tab layout last summer all but reversed the feature.

Love all the people in this thread outing themselves as not knowing what they’re talking about.
The problem is people don’t know the difference between trying to understand why a company is doing something and justifying it.

I doubt few serious people pay attention to most the 'well known' YouTubers/commentators etc.

I really hope Apple does make the larger iMac with at least the reg/pro level chipsets…several family members of mine have 27” Intel iMacs, and going to a mini/studio + Studio monitor option would be overkill or way more expensive. Ridiculous that Apple killed this.

As for the rollout, it is slowed overall…but they made a good point that the M series chips are likely on 18 month cycles similar to the original iPad chipsets were. Doubtful Apple will release Mac updates every year, as they haven’t done this in a long time.

Also, a cellular MacBook Pro is a day I buy.

Lol so many haters in these comments. Its almost like if you don't constantly add skepticism to every single thing you say you immediately become the target of comment warriors everywhere.

As unhealthy that it is, hating on someone or some company helps many people to feel better about themselves and get through the day.

Sadly, that hating requires a daily re-charge to get through the weeks and months ahead.

No. It's the fact that he never calls out Apple for anything that's the problem. No matter how big the issue is, if it involves Apple, Gruber will go to any lengths he can to minimize it or pretend it doesn't exsist.

He and Rene Richie are two peas in the same pod.
No offense, but I can basically guarantee you hardly ever, or never even listen to the talk show. Gruber calls out Apple when he finds something he doesn't like or agree with. He's been bitching about the new systems settings in macOS for a while now for example. You're just taking and running with the edge lord forum commenter narrative. My first comment stands, y'all are only happy when someone constantly trashes Apple.

Yeah its almost like half these people are probably children and teens who think YouTube shills are what every podcaster is and only the people who are nasty and diss companies constantly are the only 'real' source of info.

If he has been calling Apple out then I will happily stand corrected and admit my misjudgement.

As to your last comment, I (speaking for myself) am happy when Apple gets praise when it deserves praise. When Apple does right it should be noted as such.

Just as when Apple does something wrong, it should be called on

Stopped paying attention when he became politically obsessed. The guy lives in a bubble of Blue Checkmarks smelling each other's farts. He's awful and has such a disjointed view of others who disagree with him--everyone who disagrees with John Gruber politically is a cartoonish villain (and probably racist).

can you give more context to this? I haven't watched anything from him for years. For me he's always been a less annoying/brain dead version of iJustine.

I first read his articles in iMore, they were good. Then I heard him in some audio podcasts like Clockwise or some other with Jason Snell, fine, good, reasonable person.
Now, the moment I saw him in video podcast MacBreak Weekly explaining without making a pause to breathe and stepping over everybody else in a discussion I started to be annoyed by him, almost as much as I'm annoyed by Andy Inhatko's stuttering when talking more than one sentence while laughing of something he can't even finish to say.

Goes without saying I unsuscribed from MacBreak Weekly. And from Gruber's Talk Show too. Honestly I think that show was better when Dan Benjamin was around, but I guess the guy screw Gruber in some way since he never ever mentioned him again and before splitting he always refer to Benjamin as "my pal".

These days I like to listen to The Rebound and maybe Accidental Tech Podcast using the chapters to skip around.

0:48:24 my comment about delayed Macs. They are late, I hope a new iMacs 27" and 32" with M3, in 2023. They should have released a faster machine when they release the iMacs 24", though they were not for graphics and video production.
Now I am running an iMac (late 2015) on Catalina, I cannot upgrade to new photoshop and other 3D like Adobe
Substance, non of them will work on my iMac. An iMac Pro requires a display which could cost alone $2,500 plus. I still prefer a one in all iMac.
Of course I don't question your own preferences, but for me I can say that the M1 Max Studio that I have is a relatively good deal for a quite powerful Mac, and I could not go back to an all-in-one, both for the thermal compromises involved in such a design, as well as being able to choose a display that is just right for me, which in my case is an Eizo 27" qhd display. I could never give up the creamy mat surface and the wide gamut colors of the Eizo, and 2k vs 5k is non-issue for me. I'm assuming here that a new 27" iMac would incorporate the current studio display or better, which would drive the price up to a likely $4500 to $5000 if similarly specced out to my current Mac Studio with a 2 TB drive and 64 GB of ram, which is about $500 more than I paid for my Studio plus the Eizo display. Also, I'm starting to see cases for the Mac Studio, which, along with a 16" portable display could make it far more portable than an iMac would be - more than portable enough for my purposes.

Um, what alternate universe have you popped in from?

Yep. He's also been regularly linking to criticism about their proliferation of advertising.

I think some people sometimes treat "this brand aligns with my thinking on a lot of issues" as "fanboyism". Shockingly, Apple product users are generally going to like Apple products.

I think you can argue, as with any journalism outfit these days, the question of access and how much that might bias coverage is a relevant one, but the idea that Gruber doesn't regularly criticize Apple is blatantly false.

It's a dynamic situation

I'm glad to hear that things might be changing for Gruber on how he approaches this and what he says and how much of it.

Gruber needs to have a good relationship with Apple to get crap to review. And he needs the corporate guys to be there doing the talk show when WWDC hits each year. So, he needs to protect his income.

Not a proponent of Gruber, but he occasionally has some good insight. Very rarely but occasionally.

OTOH, since I don't feel like just bashing the guy for the millionth time (which I'm sure will happen again in the future), I will say the The Macrumors Show hosts, Dan and Hartley, are extremely affable people!

I've become a fan of the podcast in general rather quickly

Imagine is Gruber and Ritchie worked together….. run for the hills, run a way fast!

A couple of years ago, I stopped listening to John Gruber since he became too political. Frankly, I stopped visiting his website. It was unbearable and I cringed to read his articles.
