On this week's episode of The MacRumors Show, we discuss all of the latest rumors about the iPhone 17 "Slim" – a whole new kind of iPhone coming next year.

The iPhone 17 "Slim" is expected to sit above the iPhone 17 Pro Max in 2025's iPhone lineup with a starting price of approximately $1,299. The main selling point is said to be its all-new design touting a super-thin aluminium-titanium chassis and a relocated rear camera that could feature a variable aperture for the first time. It is expected to have a 6.6-inch display and Apple's custom 5G modem, and it may also feature up to 2TB of storage. Despite its high price point, the device is rumored to contain lower-end specifications than the iPhone 17 Pro models, such as a single rear camera, a standard A19 chip, and 8GB of memory.

We also discuss the iPhone 16 Pro's rumored Rose color option that looks set to replace Blue Titanium, Apple's progress on a clamshell foldable iPhone, and the fourth-generation iPhone SE, which is apparently set to hit mass production in October. The new low-cost iPhone is expected to feature an iPhone 14-like design with an OLED display and Face ID, a USB-C port, a single rear 48-megapixel camera, Apple's custom 5G modem, and the Action button.

iPhone 17 rumors are enough for me to hold off on upgrading to the 16. That and the recent news that a lot of the AI updates (like the big Siri upgrade) won't happen until 2025 anyway, so that makes the 16 less compelling at launch.

iPhone 17 Slim rumors are indeed weird. I do want a new form factor, and a slimmer phone. But I also want the specs of the rumored 17 Pro - 12GB of ram, highest tier chip, 3 cameras, etc.

Either way, enough to make me wait for the 17 lineup and see if I go for the Pro or this new Slim!

Why not focus on the not yet released iPhone 16 first. Is the iPhone 16 that boring that it isn’t worth mentioning? If the rumors of the iPhone 17 hold truth it’s also a very boring device. Wondering how that thing will be able to sell in big numbers when you can already get similar specced devices for a fraction of the price.

Hope it will have decent charging speed, better battery live, 120 ghz refresrate screens, at least a 48 mp camera and enough internal RAM so it will last a few years.

Same for the iPhone 16. Not worth the premium price anymore.

I always enjoy watching the show. Definitely one of the best technology podcasts out there with amazing insights and considered opinions by both.

I'm also enjoying watching the progression of Hartley's little book collection: varied, interesting and heavy! 💪

Not a white sock in sight.

How is this going to work?
Pay more for a thinner, but lower-specced phone?
Not unusual. Look at ‘competition spec cars’ you get nothing and less but pay way more

With each new iPhone update rumor I’m glad I didn’t buy a 15PM. And kept tge 14PM.

Looks like the 16 will be a nothing burger as well. More of the same.

Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different outcome.

Releasing identical iPhones year after year seems like insanity.

As someone who moved from a 14 Pro to a 15 Pro, it’s been as “wow” a difference as when I moved to the X. I’m glad I was able to upgrade.

The 15 Pro is so much lighter in-hand. I know, on paper it doesn’t seem like much of a difference. But that’s on paper. In-hand, it’s immediately noticeable. After almost a year of daily use, the weight difference has proven one of my fav aspects. As a no-case user, the 15 Pro’s finish and build quality are also immediately noticeable and appreciated. Aside from that ‘07 launch device, which was so exciting and revolutionary, my 15 Pro has been the most enjoyable iPhone I’ve used to date.

That said, iPhone has been a pretty solid hardware platform for a few iterations now. I’m not sure how much product evolution you’ve managed, but I’d be curious to hear some ideas around where you’d like to see iPhone go over the next 5 years.

If it's slim with reduced features but foldable (flip style, not lengthways fold) that would be fantastic, as it seems unlikely Apple will be releasing another Mini.

In quantum mechanics you can do the same thing many times and get different results.

Indeed, that is the premise underlying great high-energy particle colliders. In those colliders, physicists bash together the same particles in precisely the same way, trillions upon trillions of times.

Are they all insane to do so? It would seem they are not, since they have garnered a stupendous variety of results.

Honestly this take is really stupid at this point. What do you expect Apple to do? Turn it into a transformer?

Phones have long reached their peak and upgrades are only ever going to be minimal.

Your issue here is you upgrade every year, maybe stretch this out a bit? Then you’ll get your massive upgrades.

I upgraded to the 15 pro max from the 10. That’s a big jump.

Totally agreed on the insanity thing, but this is a you issue honestly. Stop buying every phone that comes out and just enjoy what you do have for a while longer. Insanity is YOU buying the same phone every year and expecting major jumps.

Exactly like the difference between galaxy flip and ultra. The iPhone 17 Slim is a flip phone. When unfolded its slimmer than a normal iPhone. Its finally happening people. $1,299 for the base model is actually not that bad, although Samsung did most of the work to bring these costs down after 6 gens of their own version. It all makes sense.

Maybe if you upgrade every year. However, I upgraded from an XR two months ago so it really doesn't bother me that the 15 Pro isn't all that different from the 14 Pro.

My 15 Pro doesn't have amazing battery life so I would choose a 16 Plus over a 17 Slim just because of battery life. New design is irrelevant because my iPhone is always in a case. I would also take a plastic back for that reason.
