How is this going to work?
Pay more for a thinner, but lower-specced phone?
Depends how much customers value their phone being thin. If they demand crazy thin they can't also expect the best components can fit or be cooled in there .

How is this such an outlandish concept to many? Remember the MacBook Air reveal? It was a tech revolution, despite it being a less powerful product than others!

Smaller, thinner components require engineering, which means more expensive production processes and cutting other developed features.

Not every user needs Pro-everything. Some need lighter weight and thinner dimensions. If these aren’t compatible with a Pro camera/battery/processor yet, give the customers options. I'm here for it.

This was my thought as well. This is going to be a proof of concept type device. I imagine the first iteration is only going to appeal to earlier adopters but eventually this new engineering and design will make its way to the rest of the iPhone line.

To be fair, the first MBAir would throttle simply by looking at it.

Could it be that Apple wants to widely field test risky new tech with the iPhone Slim? If Apple has 95% confidence in their homegrown 5G modem, that could be good enough to put in a low-volume phone, but they wouldn't want to put the reputation of an entire generation at risk if that 5% chance leads to a serious problem.

Also, ultra-thinness might have limited appeal by itself, but it could be a crucial ingredient of an upcoming foldable. Perhaps producing and field testing an ultra-thin slab phone is an experience Apple wants to build upon before producing a foldable.

I've been enjoying the drama with Hartley and the Vision Pro. I've never tried the AR/VR headspace but why do I get the feeling it's already out of date.

On this week's episode of The MacRumors Show, we discuss all of the latest rumors about the iPhone 17 "Slim" – a whole new kind of iPhone coming next year.

The iPhone 17 "Slim" is expected to sit above the iPhone 17 Pro Max in 2025's iPhone lineup with a starting price of approximately $1,299. The main selling point is said to be its all-new design touting a super-thin aluminium-titanium chassis and a relocated rear camera that could feature a variable aperture for the first time. It is expected to have a 6.6-inch display and Apple's custom 5G modem, and it may also feature up to 2TB of storage. Despite its high price point, the device is rumored to contain lower-end specifications than the iPhone 17 Pro models, such as a single rear camera, a standard A19 chip, and 8GB of memory.

We also discuss the iPhone 16 Pro's rumored Rose color option that looks set to replace Blue Titanium, Apple's progress on a clamshell foldable iPhone, and the fourth-generation iPhone SE, which is apparently set to hit mass production in October. The new low-cost iPhone is expected to feature an iPhone 14-like design with an OLED display and Face ID, a USB-C port, a single rear 48-megapixel camera, Apple's custom 5G modem, and the Action button.

Slim phone, smaller camera … sounds like the foldable phone is coming

If recent Chinese phones are anything to go by, this should be using a silicon carbon battery. That's how devices like the Honor Magic v3 have managed to shove in a 5150mah battery in a slim frame (the fold 6 is stuck at 4400). It's supposedly around 10-12% more dense than current battery tech, supports faster charging, and has a better lifetime -- sounds too good to be true, but would be nice! There are rumours of Apple looking into this if you search around...

If that's not the case, then I would not be surprised to see a 'standard' battery in the standard devices and the new tech in the Pros. After all, only pros will need a phone that stays on all day

This tech should also be driving the 'slimmer' MacBooks also rumoured on here

Oh and about the Rose Gold rumour. That colour is very popular in China... got to fix those poor sales!

Shame, as I really like the blue -- especially the iPhone 12!

Knowing (per Apple) that AI will need hefty RAM, why upgrade to a 16? Seems to me it's obsolete before it is released.

If I were a marketing guy I would delay releasing Apple Intelligence (AI) until after the 16 was released. I'd say something like "coming in October" or "coming later." Then I would release a section of AI that can run on adequately on 6GB RAM and say the rest is "coming later", which of course would mean requires an iPhone 17.

I'll keep my 14 Pro until they deliver a product instead of words.

With each new iPhone update rumor I’m glad I didn’t buy a 15PM. And kept tge 14PM.

Looks like the 16 will be a nothing burger as well. More of the same.

Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different outcome.

Releasing identical iPhones year after year seems like insanity.
This is somehow trying to make a clever point but beyond having a nice quote in there, doesn’t make sense at all: They release iPhones that are not too different from the previous models every year and expect the same result, which is incredibly high sales every year. Now what is insane about that?

Sales have stagnated.
Retention is falling.
Desertion to android is at an all time high.

People are keeping their devices longer.

Apple wouldn’t be spending millions on market research getting ready to make a folding phone.
Apples loosing footing in a massive market, China.

Apple is at constant war with the EU.

You honestly don’t make sense.

1. Normal for a product like a smartphone that is mature in its life cycle.
2. & 3. Source? This is true in some markets while in other markets, more people are switching to iOS.
4. This is a good thing and results from Apple making it long lasting and more durable with great software support.
5. Of course they do market research and investigate new developments, it’s only sensible and the opposite of insane.
6. This is a big issue, I hope they will find a way to work together instead of being hostile by withholding features from a quarter of their customers.

My point is just that, none of the above leads to the conclusion that Apples behavior is "insane". They have a dominant product in a very mature market that they keep improving over time while investigating more radical changes and innovations, which sounds very reasonable for a big company.
