Will the Ipad Air 12.9 get the mini LED display (non Promotion) from the current IPP 12.9 though? Probably not, but could be a surprise from Apple.
I'm pretty sure this 12.9" iPad Air will be to the 10.9" iPad Air what iPhone Plus is to the $799 iPhone 6.1".

-Larger display, bigger battery, and that's it.

iPads Air 10.9" and 12.9" will be identical apart from size. Which means they'll both get a display upgrade or neither will.

However, being that iPad 10 and iPad Air now both have "Liquid Retina" displays (iPad 9th Gen. only has "Retina"), it would seem fitting that iPad Air move to something better to make the incentive to spend more on an Air over 10th Gen. iPad more obvious.

Especially if iPads Pro move to OLED.

I just can't see Apple doing complete overhauls for both iPads Air and Pro at one event.

  • iPadOS needs a dedicated "desktop" mode when mouse and keyboard is connected.
  • It also needs a Safari overhaul as it's just not as well optimized on iPad versus its macOS counterpart.
  • Also needs the ability to create web apps like macOS as the "iPad" app variants are just blown up iPhone apps which feel terrible to use both through touch and KB&M.
I would give anything for the first bullet. Proper external display support and replace the s**t circular cursor. It’s terrible. Why can’t be have a proper cursor for Pages or Numbers, etc?

NO. Ipad OS needs a major overhaul. To be like macOS. Then it becomes a laptop replacement.

Dam. it costs just as much as a Mac. why not.

DARRREEEEENNNNNNNNNNN.

Why you no like MacOS?

I didn’t watch the video as it wouldn’t have landed on a conclusion - just came to reply to your comment.

My iPad PRO M1 is my favourite device for on the go (uni and travel mainly). It does absolutely everything and is super fast.

If you want something with an option of bringing up a command prompt, I have a 486 DX2 66hmz PC for you.

It’s a floating finger tip.

It speaks to a design language that connects the familiar with the new. The human connection with technology. What is old is now new.

I made that up

There are minor differences between ipad air and pro that are often overlooked and were a real regression going from pro 2017 to air 2022, after keeping it 5 years!
  • 2 speakers instead of 4, lack of depth in sound
  • lack of led flash / flashlight looking for something in the dark at home
  • Crappy touchId compared to the old round button: 70% failure rate
  • price rise despite not much new

100%. It also needs multiuser support. I can understand why Apple wouldn’t add multiuser support (so that they can sell more devices) but, if a Chromebook can handle multiple user accounts on a single device, why can’t iPads — at last the Pros?
Multi user support is what's needed for me to buy one. When there are multiple users in the house that could benefit from occasional light iPad use, it seems unfair to ask them each to buy their own one. Parents and children, for example, should be allowed to have separate logins, like on a Mac or PC.

Couple this with Face ID on the iPad Air and Mini; not only is the convenience a game changer (like on my iPhone 12 Pro Max and 11" M2 iPad Pro), but it'd make the separate family member profiles a more seamless experience - not having to log out and back in, etc...

100%! Do that, and stick the camera on the long edge as expected, and I might even buy my first iPad for nearly a decade. Maybe an Air, maybe a Pro.

Is the upgrade big enough? For doing what exactly?

iPad hardware upgrades are foreseeably irrelevant, as long as iOS is not able to harnesses the power of the M1…M3. It’s like driving a big block engine in a truck using bicycle wheels. These things need MacOS on it.

Simply try to decide/encode a movie file on an iPad M2 for instance and compare it to an M2 MBP. Further what does the broad customer base do in terms of everyday tasks with an iPad M2 that thay can’t do with 9.th gen?

Nobody needs an M3 in an iPad to enjoy the latest Emojicons for sure.

Whatever the upgrade is, people will still want to buy iPads to either replace broken ones or upgrade from older models. These aren't aimed at current model iPad Air owners.

There's no tablet competition so...

It's also a shame Apple make replacing an iPad battery SOOOO difficult. 10 hour battery reduced to 5 hours? Apple will claim the battery is still >80% capacity, which is a complete lie. By comparison, you can replace your iPhone battery at 90% without issue. I would happily replace the battery on my 2018 iPad Pro and use it longer but I cannot get the battery replaced (I don't trust third parties).

The iPad Air will be overshadowed by the iPad Pro announced alongside it in terms of features/design, but the larger Air should get people’s attention.

I have the Air 4 and didn’t even think about upgrading to the 5, even though it has double the RAM. The iPad apps I use don’t seem to need more than the 4GB RAM I have.

If I upgrade my Air, it’ll probably be to the Pro, for its ProMotion, quad speakers, OLED and an M chip for the gaming I occasionally do on it. Then again, I won’t be buying games for the iPad that are also found on my consoles, so I’m not even sure buying a new iPad just for game improvements would be a smart move for me.

Maybe the OLED and quad speakers would be enough incentive for me to upgrade, so I can have a better viewing experience. We’ll see. I’m probably better off waiting another couple years, once my Air 4 really starts showing more signs of age.

These new iPads would have to be pretty exciting for me to justify an upgrade. Apple’s done a really good job of building up anticipation for any new iPad, since we haven’t had a new one since the fall of 2022.
