Tried my wife's Max and although the larger screen looks nice, it doesn't really offer any more usable space. You have the same number of icons on the screen, opening a website might show one additional word on a sentence. I guess it is kinda useful if you watch movies.

Why are the Max sizes so popular? Going from a 13" to a 17" laptop makes all the difference (work with multiple windows on the same screen) but I don't really see the benefit of having a bigger screen on the iPhone since it displays the same amount of info, icons, etc., but just a little bit bigger?

It's basically screen size for media viewing/consumption and battery life. Youtube videos are physically larger to view, instagram and facebook posts are larger to view. I do agree after having a 14 pro max and going back to the 15 Pro that there's not any more "useable" real estate. You basically just get a few more lines of text on reddit or a website.

I think most people dig the bigger social media post size and the battery life. Me included on the battery! I'm really missing my 14 PM battery.

For me as i get older and my eyes get more shot, the larger screen makes reading graphic novels more comfortable. Also picture in picture is actually useful. And now that i find myself streaming video games more with moonlight and xcloud i love the larger screen.

Very much agree. Moved from 14 Pro to 15 PM and I was quite surprised to see how badly the larger screen is used. Everything just feels zoomed in. Everything is set to minimum (font size, icon size) yet it still feels too big.

Sure, photos look nice and battery life is great.

I noticed that too. While the Max is a very nice device, video didn't actually feel any much bigger and text on most apps/sites were identical in size. My wife loves hers but I ended up going back to the Pro since (for me) it really didn't offer an improved experience that was worth the increase in size/weight.

BTW, I'm not dismissing larger phones. I'm actually all for it if they start making a large phone experience more unique. But if it doesnt have split screen or pen support then it just isnt for me (yet).

I will agree that i dont understand why apple pencil support isnt a thing yet.

For me it's ease of handling and use. Smaller phones have less surface area to hold on to than my iPhone 11 Pro Max. I'm also aiming with my finger at smaller keys on smaller phones. I make more typing/tapping mistakes. I have to hold smaller phones closer to me to see the screen more clearly (because it's smaller and the type on the screen is therefore smaller).

Holding a smaller phone for any length of time will eventually cause my hand to start cramping. A larger phone is more comfortable for me to hold. I have Psoriatic Arthritis and having to grip small things for extended periods of time hurts.

Pretty much that's it for me.

But, serious question: Does the Max actually offer more screen real estate or not, or does it just show exactly the same screen layout as the Pro, only bigger? The Max does have a higher screen resolution after all. Especially for web browsing, this should result in more text visible on screen?

The 'just a little bit bigger' is a big draw for a lot of people. Not just icons, but also media content like videos, YouTube, etc. Makes for a more pleasant experience. Also, you get more text on the screen for things like emails, text conversations, web pages, etc.

I went big with the 6 Plus and have never looked back.

Yes, there's more text and it's usually a couple lines more.

you kind of have a point because the text is not larger, so how is it easier to read?

Yeah, I don't get it either. The "regular" Pro is plenty big for a phone and is much more portable IMHO. No, I'm not going to try and put my Macbook Air in my pocket either.

The problem is, because if a phone is treated as a "pocketable device", then screen realestete gain is not so noticable as is noticable how large the phone gets.

For example, there is much more screen on the 16'' Macbook, compared to the 14'', yet if the laptop is carried in a backpack, it doesn't matter as much.

I agreed with you for many years. Then my 20/10 vision deteriorated last year and I find the extra screen real estate of the 15 PM hugely beneficial over the 14 Pro.

As others have mentioned, there are added benefits, such as the increased battery life. I really got sick of the battery life on my 13 Pro -- it seemed to drain in just a few hours under heavy use, no more than half a day.

Beyond that, as you age, you'll find you appreciate the larger screen (and you can make the text larger) more and more.

I tend to go more to the original post and read it and understand his opinion. Apple makes the 2 different sizes of both the standard and Pro models. A lot depends on the person who uses the phones and I tend to the smaller size of the Pro model as I am retired but my hobbies are rough on any phone and I have a iMac 27", and a iPad mini along with the iPhone. Being that my hobbies are vehicles and tractors I normally sit the phone on top of my work bench and then go do what I want in my shop the 6.1" display is more then enough for 65 year old eyes.

I also have a little issue is there is some sort with the larger displays that I get eyestrain in using them (it is also noticeable in my iPad mini). But that could also be related to the fact I have cataracts that do not need to be operated on yet.

The funny thing is my wife does not like the larger size of even the standard iPhone and has a iPhone 13 mini. She prizes a smaller size phone that is easier to handle for her.

It really depends on the person and their choices on what they want and by offering a variety of different sizes the folks can either be confused by the selection or embrace what they want and like. Also known as consumerism.

Yes, in e-mail and web surfing, etc … not much difference productivity wise.

But for 100 dollars more, getting more battery, a bigger screen, and an improved camera is actually a pretty good deal. As long as the size bump isn't physically intrusive. I found the older Max models annoying, but the new one is just on the bubble where I'm OK with the form factor now.
