Ugh...

Why is it that so many Americans are prone to macho gun posturing?

Europeans on this forum should appreciate how good they have it compared to this gun-crazy culture...

They may have done the same thing for anything that looked expensive..like a nice tv or jewelry. I doubt thieves only go after apple laptops lol.

so say the countries that gave us the Crusades, copious amounts of beheadings, the Inquisition and an introduction to the wonderful world of STDs.

I don't get it. How is defending your home gun-crazy? How is minding your own business on your personal property "posturing?"

You paint with a broad brush here; let's not conflate militia-minded gun nuts (of which there are a few in the USA, I admit) with people living their lives normally and responsibly keeping a firearm.

I would suggest that the issue is that Americans are prone to disrespecting each others' territory and property, thus potentially warranting the need for protection. If that is not the case overseas, I am envious. If you feel that a lower level of protection is needed, that is your prerogative.

The law here (in my state) says if you come onto my property and I feel you are a threat, I can kill you dead. If the locked door and that fact aren't deterrents, I don't know what is.

Move to Texas and buy a shotgun. Good to go.

I live in a CCW state and there are 5 guns/rifles in the house total.

...not one of them stepped up to the plate and did anything about the burglary. They just sat there.

Motionless.

Letting it happen.

What are the prices on motion sensing gun turrets like in half life 1?

The only defense is not to have friends or not to have Apple products. One or the other.

Even a German Shepard can be fed a juicy steak and rendered useless.

Home monitoring

I also have several apple products and would like to know if I could use my
Mac mini to link into some type of monitoring system for my home. Apple
have great products but its like you cant have good things these days
because the economy sucks which brings out the criminals that take your
stuff that you worked hard for.

I have seen wireless remote control cameras that are pretty trick, but such a system comes at a cost: http://foscam.us/

For a LOT less money you can turn an iSight camera or webcam into a motion detector that captures images of the intruder while sending an instant alert to your iPhone: http://www.orbicule.com/witness/index.php $39/$29 students You can connect up to three USB/Firewire cams to your Mac.

Combine it with Undercover to recover your Mac should it get stolen: http://www.orbicule.com/undercover/index.php

There is a discount if you purchase both apps.

Wow, real bummer you got ripped off. Hope you recover your stuff. As my signature indicates I own VariousAppleStuff. My security system/measures include the following:

- live in a small town population 8,000
- choose my friends very carefully
- rarely ever any strangers in home
- valuables kept in one of two safes weighing 900 and 300 pounds
- have Brinks alarm system
- decorative iron storm dorms front and back
- motion sensor flood lights
- small but noisy dog
- security cameras front and back
- nosey neighbors whom I stay in touch with
- suitable firearms for protection
- dead bolts on all doors
- energy efficient solar screens where I can see out but they can't see in
- yard fenced on all sides
- sheriff sub station less than 1/2 mile away
- neighborhood watch member
- acute sense of paranoia
- trust no one I haven't known since 16
- no windows obstructed by shrubbery
- prayer for the safety of me and mine
- use find my Mac
- have home owners insurance

Despite all of the above I could still become a victim. However, my point is, there are things one can do to lessen the possibility and the accompanying losses.

1) Two month old thread

2) Poster has a history of known troll posts (but this is quite different- over on the iPhone forums, he's more likely to say that thieves are going to smash your windows and throw bricks at you because you have a Samsung Galaxy phone)

3) Clearly trolling here, nobody who's capable of typing coherently is dumb enough to actually think somebody he knows breaking into his house to steal his computer = having a MacBook is unsafe

So please stop taking him seriously.

Security systems generally offer a good solution. Even if you have a decent amount of expensive stuff, a security system is a good deterrent. After all, it works for businesses fairly well, and in the US the costs are reasonable.

I anticipate break-ins, and gauge my security around that.

Wow, thanks. You did a little research I guess. Thinking about this, perhaps your right. I does sound like a Troll.

Didn't realize the things you pointed out. Guess I'm not too good at recognizing trolls. Thanks for the heads up.

I have all that and 115lbs of German Shepherd with an attitude :)

Yep big dogs are part of my security solution, already "had" one intruder, mine are trained to protect the children and the property "woe betide" anyone who transgresses as I have no issue in setting them on to the intruder.

Good thing is that police are not "bound & tied" as a result they are not overly sympathetic to the perpetuators condition ;)

This is the stupidest thread I've seen in a long time and the OP is a clueless troll. As someone else pointed out, this is an old, resurrected thread.

Used to record music with a guy couple years ago.

When I knew him he was a normal person.

Later went bad. Stalked my home. Knew a lot about me.

Shady stuff man....

Yes had home insurance.

I think what you're saying is the MBP makes your house unsafe/target for thieves. ;-)

I've lived in (Spanish) Harlem and worst part of Brooklyn in NY and never had a problem. Then again, I didn't go around at night with white headphones poking out and not bother paying attention to where I'm going and who's following me.
