Ok, this is straightforward. The short of it is the money will be taken out when the item ships. If the money gets taken out immediately at order and put back a few days later well then you paid with a debit card, Apple authorizes the charge to make sure you have money in your account, then releases it a few days later. Then will fully charge you when it ships.

No monies were ever charged or transferred to Apple. You card issuer simply put a pre-authorization and held back that much on your account in case Apple decided to make the charge. This is done on accounts that are near their limit (or have a low limit) and/or newer accounts. For credit reporting/building purposes you should never charge more than 30% of your card's limit.

I paid with a debit card and never had it charged, other than a $1 validating hold. I think it was something with BoA, as everyone reporting holds for the full amount seemed to be BoA cardholders.

Adding data point because I'm bored.

Wachovia/WF, debit, entire amount pre-auth'd but I haven't looked today to see if it fell back off.

It's up to the individual bank as to whether or not they show pre-auths when customers check their accounts transaction online.

BofA shows me a lot more "behind-the-scene" stuff when I check my account online than any other bank I've banked with.

I think that if people are worried about whether the monies have been taken out now or next week when it ships, then maybe they shouldn't be buying an IPAD because they really can't afford one.

I was only charged $1 to my account for pre-order of 2 iPads. I hope they don't take the money for both at some point very soon.

My card was never charged and typically with Pre-Orders you are not charged until the order ships.

My credit union always shows preauthorizations as part of my pending balance. Pay at the pump gas is the most common, and the $1 charge from Apple showed up (and came back within 24 hours).

How it is that a) this is such a common question b) people actually have a bank account and fail to understand how using your debit card works.

Future Financial Leaders of America hear me out:
Banks will show a pre-auth as money out or as pending depending upon their own insituation rules. Actual credit cards will be hit witha pre-auth but you're likely not to see this, exceptions to these rules apply but this is not abnormal. Apple wants to see if the money is there, however, if it's not there when the item is set to ship you're not getting your toy.

Personally I wish they would just take the money now.

My bank put a pre-authorization on my card and it doesn't expire until Wednesday at midnight they said. And I pre-ordered at 8:35am on Friday.

As for your statement about it being on accounts that are near their limit, that's simply not true. The charge for my iPad is nowhere near my limit, not even at 10% of my limit yet it's still on my account.
