I refuse to accept the results of the keynote.

It was just a few years ago that Apple leaned into the iMac so hard that they even went as far as creating an iMac Pro.

Everyone knows supply chains are really restricted right now. The new Mac Studio is already backordered until the end of May. I ordered one 3 hours after it was announced and my delivery estimate is in May, 7 weeks away!

My guess is Apple is trying to focus their limited resources on iPhone, iPad and MacBook production since those are the heavy movers (in that order). I bet they had to pick either between a new Mac Pro or a new iMac, and since they just released a 24" iMac with M1, they probably decided it was more important right now to refresh the Mac Pro instead.

Once supply chains clear up and the insane demand for M1 devices settles down I bet Apple will definitely release a 27" version of the iMac. At the end of this year if/when they bump the CPU in the current M1 24" iMac, I could easily see them adding a 27" option too.

There are rumors that a larger iMac is still in development, so I also don't think it's completely dead. That said, Apple seems to work more for a iMac Pro replacement than a 27 inch iMac replacement. The price will probably be significatives more than what you'd paid for the last 27 inch iMac.

27” is too close to 24”. If we see a larger iMac ever again it will be 30” is my guess.

The only 27” iMac I could imagine is a Pro model with mini-LED, etc. A consumer focused larger iMac will never be 27” again.

I have a 2020 27" iMac. I'v since purchased and returned two of the new 24" versions which I like for various reasons, like speed and such, but returned because I had some trouble getting them setup properly and I noticed that the screens seemed much foggier, less sharp, less contrasty, and somehow less attractive to work on (for me). At first I thought nah, can't be. Then I studied pretty carefully and there seemed to be a distinct difference to the disadvantage of the newer model. Maybe you get accustomed to the new screen, but at the moment I'm still happier with the old 27". Am I crazy? It's possible.

I didn't know the screens on the new ones were different from the LG panels Apple used in the intel iMacs!

This thread will certainly go on for years, much like the "the new mac mini is almost certainly coming" thread. I am proud to be in on the ground floor.

We are definitely in bizarro world--Who would have thought that the release of the xMac (sorta) would result in the death of a very popular iMac model?

Here you go, at about the 6:50 mark in this video, Gurman discusses a future "consumer" (M2 Pro/Max) iMac Pro.

Y'all do realize what's happening, right? This is a reversal of Steve Jobs's Reality Distortion Field. No longer does Apple need to bend reality to fit its needs, reality now bends itself away from Apple.

I'm still staggered by how many people refuse to face the facts and choose to trust and believe unsubstantiated rumors made up by individuals with a track record that is about as solid as my toddler's potty training achievements spread and repeated over and over again exclusively for the purpose of generating traffic and keeping the rumor mill going, thereby falling victim to the availability cascade (a self-reinforcing process in which a collective belief gains more and more plausibility through its increasing repetition in public discourse, or "repeat something long enough and it will become true") rather than official Apple statements.

@mj_ Don't Panic!

I linked the Gurman video, because I had originally dismissed the possibility of another 27" iMac, in the other thread, on the day of the Apple event. My argument, was that the Studio combo was a much more flexible, scaleable, solution to the larger iMac. It's definitely better suited to my purposes going forward. But Gurman's RRP niche argument, for a redefined "consumer" iMac Pro starting beneath the Mac Studio's price bracket, seems reasonable. (Edit - it's also a good explanation for the pause too, the typical mode of comparison between an old and new model gets broken.)

Is he right or wrong? I don't know and only time will tell. His long ranging leaks do tend to pan out though. If I had to bet on his, relatively well informed, projection for what Apple will do next or my own blind assumptions, I reckon I'd put my money on Gurman.

We’ll see! But there’s no way that apple gives a M2 Pro/Mac chip + 27 inch Promotion mini-LED display for 1999$. Either Apple raise significatively the price, or gives a cheaper display technology
What i've been thinking. There WILL be a larger iMac, but it's likely going to come branded as "pro" and come with a base chip that only 10% of former 27' users would prefer, along with a price tag 1K+ more.

Apple has basically told old base 27' users to go with a mini and studio display.

I keep seeing comments on here like this. This site is called MACRUMORS. Fans of rumors love the back and forth, will they, won't they discussions...It's fun for people.

I can remember PowerBook G5, spy photos of the "iHome" set top box device, and xMac.

If we waited or official Apple statements, this site should only be active about 3 days of the year, the day after each Apple event. (spring, WWDC and Fall)

well well.. I'd like to see this thread in 4 years. In the meantime, I'm planning to get one of the last 2020 5k iMacs because I simply refuse to pay 1600$ for the same display only.
Now that makes total sense. I've done the same and truly delighted with the 2020 5k iMac - mid range model, which I was able to find for a drop-dead price.

Exactly! I don`t want to miss the last units at refurbished store. I just would like to get the high-end model with 5700xt since I play games on windows too and want to be safe for the next a few years until there are more apple silicon models. I have used M1 Mac Mini and still using base model M1 Macbook Air but this was a temporary attempt for me until the bigger Apple Silicon iMac arrives, well since it's confirmed to be dead, time to act before the last 27" models disappear.

5700XT is an awesome GPU. Getting hard to find with a decent size SSD for a reasonable price, so don't hesitate too long.
