I read this post written by Robert Scoble in which he talks about the changes that Apple is preparing in terms of AR / VR:

More than 40,💲💲💲,💲💲💲,💲💲💲 have already been invested by Apple.

Whatever it is, it will be huge and I think it will be as important as the iPhone was in 2007. I can’t wait!

If you read the post, he's not talking about a specific product. He's talking about an overall philosophy change of the company towards 3D experiences. Including some that were just announced just a couple weeks ago, Apple Music's support for Spatial 3D audio, and some Apple have been releasing for years, like the different advances of AR Kit and their Lidars. They have been doing their own version of Google Street View, except using Lidar to actually 3D-scan the world. None of these are leaks or secrets, he's just putting together everything Apple has been known to be doing and rumored to be doing for the last few years. Despite the click-bait title of the article, he says things will be announced over the next year and beyond, not just this WWDC.

Your post says 40 billion on VR glasses development. 40 BILLION? Apple used all of its 2019 net income to develop a single wearable product that isn’t remotely a new product and whose market sales penetration isn’t even known?

Someone needs to double check their math with special attention to decimal point location mistakes.

That’s my concern, at least up to now, is AR/VR is a neat gadget that is gimmicky with a notably limited market.
to contrast, Apple’s smart watch holds somewhere around 50% of the smart watch market. It’s likely considered a huge success especially for an Apple eco limited device. Further, the smart watch market has definite room to grow. It likely is a far bigger seller than AR/VR device (at least right now) yet even the Apple watch doesn’t have profit margin to justify a multi ten billion dollar R&D budget.
Apple AR/VR would have to be revolutionary and be something that the average person could easily use, integrate seamlessly into the eco, and also find it entertaining/useful. Otherwise it’s a highly niche product with very limited sales potential.
